Leucopis americana is a species of fly in the family Chamaemyiidae. [2] [3]
A crane fly is any member of the dipteran superfamily Tipuloidea, which contains the living families Cylindrotomidae, Limoniidae, Pediciidae and Tipulidae, as well as several extinct families. "Winter crane flies", members of the family Trichoceridae, are sufficiently different from the typical crane flies of Tipuloidea to be excluded from the superfamily Tipuloidea, and are placed as their sister group within Tipulomorpha.
Pipunculidae is a family of flies (Diptera) commonly termed big-headed flies, a reference to the large (holoptic) eyes, which cover nearly the entire head. The family is found worldwide and more than 1300 species have been described.
The Chamaemyiidae are a small family of acalyptrate flies with less than 200 species described worldwide. The larvae of these small flies are active and predatory and are often used for biological control of aphids, scale insects, and similar pests. Chamaemyiid fossils are poorly represented in amber deposits, but a few examples are known from the Eocene epoch onwards.
Rhagionidae or snipe flies are a small family of flies. They get their name from the similarity of their often prominent proboscis that looks like the beak of a snipe.
Bibionidae is a family of flies (Diptera) containing approximately 650–700 species worldwide. Adults are nectar feeders and emerge in numbers in spring. Because of the likelihood of adults flies being found in copula, they have earned colloquial names such as "love bugs" or "honeymoon flies".
Hybomitra is a genus of horse flies in the family Tabanidae. There are at least 240 described species in Hybomitra.
Phyllomya is a genus of flies in the family Tachinidae.
Campiglossa is a genus of fruit flies in the family Tephritidae. There are at least 190 described species in Campiglossa.
Cornelius Becker Philip (1900–1987) was an American entomologist, noted for assigning comedic names to species he described.
Epochrinopsis is a genus of the family Tephritidae, better known as fruit flies.
Xylomya is a fly genus in the family Xylomyidae, the "wood soldier flies".
Leucopis is a genus of flies in the family Chamaemyiidae. There are at least 20 described species in Leucopis. Flies from this genus are used in biological control of adelgids.
Dialysis is a genus of flies in the family Xylophagidae.
Lygistorrhininae, commonly called long-beaked fungus gnats is a subfamily of flies in the Diptera family Keroplatidae. The groups was long treated as a separate family, but molecular phylogenetic analysis has shown it to belong to Keroplatidae. There are about 7 genera and at least 30 described species in Lygistorrhininae.
Oreogetonidae is a family of flies. There is at least one genus, Oreogeton, and at least 30 described species in Oreogetonidae.
Eudioctria is a genus of robber flies in the family Asilidae. There are about 14 described species in Eudioctria.
Neolasioptera is a genus of gall midges, insects in the family Cecidomyiidae. There are at least 130 described species in Neolasioptera.
Bremia is a genus of gall midges. There are at least 20 described species in Bremia.
Ornidia obesa is a species of syrphid fly in the family Syrphidae.
Toxonevra is a genus of flutter flies in the family Pallopteridae. There are about eight described species in Toxonevra.
