Liberty Township is a civil township of Jackson County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2010 census, the township population was 2,961. [3]
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 35.62 square miles (92.26 km2), of which 34.27 square miles (88.76 km2) is land and 1.35 square miles (3.50 km2) (3.79%) is water. [3]
Liberty Township is in southern Jackson County and is bordered to the south by Hillsdale County. The southeast corner of the township touches the northwest corner of Lenawee County. U.S. Route 127 forms the eastern border of the township and leads north 9 miles (14 km) to Jackson, the county seat. Most of the township is drained by the Grand River, except for the westernmost part, which is drained by the North Branch of the Kalamazoo River.
As of the census [1] of 2000, there were 2,903 people, 1,073 households, and 857 families residing in the township. The population density was 83.5 inhabitants per square mile (32.2/km2). There were 1,186 housing units at an average density of 34.1 per square mile (13.2/km2). The racial makeup of the township was 97.97% White, 0.14% African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.41% from other races, and 0.83% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.10% of the population.
There were 1,073 households, out of which 34.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 70.5% were married couples living together, 5.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.1% were non-families. 16.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the township the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 103.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.8 males.
The median income for a household in the township was $55,046, and the median income for a family was $59,135. Males had a median income of $46,842 versus $29,323 for females. The per capita income for the township was $27,433. About 1.7% of families and 2.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.8% of those under age 18 and 1.8% of those age 65 or over.

Waterloo State Recreation Area is the third-largest park in Michigan, encompassing over 21,000 acres (85 km2) of forest, lakes and wetlands. Located in northeast Jackson County and parts of Washtenaw County, the park is the largest in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and features 4 campgrounds, 11 lakes, a nature center, and over 50 miles (80 km) of trails - some for horses, bicycles, hiking and cross-country skiing. Waterloo SRA includes the Black Spruce Bog Natural Area, a National Natural Landmark and borders the 11,000-acre (45 km2) Pinckney Recreation Area on the east and the 950-acre (3.8 km2) Phyllis Haehnle Memorial Audubon Sanctuary to the west. The land preserved by the park is not all contiguous and numerous private landholdings and roads run through the park area. The area is characterized by moraines, kettle lakes, swamps and bogs left by retreating glaciers after the last ice age. The park was created by the federal government during the Great Depression and is long-term leased to the state.
