Gian Luigi Rondi was an Italian film critic. He was a member of the jury at the 12th and 15th Moscow International Film Festival. He was also a member of the jury at the 11th and 32nd Berlin International Film Festival. He was also a member of the jury three times at the Cannes Film Festival in 1963, 1967 and 1980. He was the president of the jury at the 48th Venice Film Festival. A closeted homosexual for most of his life, he was married to Yvette Spadaccini from 1948 to her death in 2012.

The 58th annual Berlin International Film Festival was held from February 7 to February 17, 2008. The festival opened with Martin Scorsese's documentary film Shine a Light. Be Kind Rewind by Michel Gondry served as the closing film. Greek filmmaker Costa Gavras, was selected to serve as the Jury President for the main competition.

The Queer Palm is an independently sponsored prize for selected LGBT-relevant films entered into the Cannes Film Festival. The award was founded in 2010 by journalist Franck Finance-Madureira. It is sponsored by Olivier Ducastel and Jacques Martineau, filmmakers of Jeanne and the Perfect Guy, The Adventures of Felix, Crustacés et Coquillages, and L'Arbre et la forêt.

The 35th annual Berlin International Film Festival was held from 15 to 26 February 1985. The Golden Bear was awarded to East German film Die Frau und der Fremde directed by Rainer Simon and British film Wetherby directed by David Hare. The retrospective was dedicated to Special effects.
