Henry Franklin Winkler (born October 30, 1945) is an American actor, executive producer, and director.

General overview

Winkler grew up in New York and was a student in the Yale School of Drama. During the summers, he and his Yale classmates stayed in New Haven and opened a summer stock theater called the "New Haven Free Theater." [1] They performed various plays including Woyzeck, [1] and Just Add Water (improv night). [1] He also performed in the political piece The American Pig at the Joseph Papp Public Theater for the New York Shakespeare Festival in New York City, along with classmates James Keach, James Naughton, and Jill Eikenberry. [1]

After graduation, he joined the Yale Repertory Theatre company. [1] [2] During the 1970-71 season, Winkler appeared in Story Theater Reportory (October 1970) [3] as the Rabbi in Gimpel the Fool [3] (and also appeared in Saint Julian the Hospitaler and Olympian Games). [3] He also appeared as the youngest son in The Revenger's Tragedy (Nov-December, 1970), [3] Tommy's nephew in Where Has Tommy Flowers Gone? (January 1971), [3] Young Siward in Macbeth (Feb-March 1971), [3] Andres in Woyzeck and Play (April 1971), [3] and Master of Ceremonies/Prow/Couple 2/Horses/Milliner in Two by Brecht and Weill: The Little Mahagonny and The Seven Deadly Sins (May–June, 1971 [3] and January 20–29, 1972. Winkler then moved back to New York, working in theater, television commercials, and the independent film The Lords of Flatbush (1974), with then unknown Sylvester Stallone. After a short period in Los Angeles, he won the role of Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli (on the 1974-1984 American television series Happy Days ). He also portrayed Jack Dunne in Heroes (1977), Andy in the Carl Reiner film The One and Only (1978), and Chuck Lumley in Ron Howard's Night Shift (1982). In addition, he gained recognition as an executive producer for works such as MacGyver, Dead Man's Gun , the CBS Schoolbreak Special: "All the Kids Do It", Hollywood Squares, and Who Are the DeBolts? And Where Did They Get Nineteen Kids?

Winkler has evolved into a character actor, [5] portraying roles such as the high school principal Arthur Himbry in Scream , Coach Klein in Adam Sandler's The Waterboy , Barry Zuckerkorn in Arrested Development, Sy Mittleman in Childrens Hospital , Dr. Saperstein in Parks and Recreation, Mr. Rock in the Hank Zipzer BBC series, Eddie R. Lawson in Royal Pains , Fritz in Monsters at Work , Uncle Joe in The French Dispatch, Al Pratt (Uncle Al) in Black Adam, and Gene Cousineau in Barry. He also appears in five Christmas films: An American Christmas Carol as Benedict Slade (1979), Katharine Hepburn's last film One Christmas as Dad (1994), The Most Wonderful Time of the Year as Uncle Ralph (2008), Mr. Rock in Hank Zipzer's Christmas Catastrophe (2016), and Grandpa Bill in All I Want For Christmas is You (2017). In 1986, he directed Dolly Parton in A Smoky Mountain Christmas.

Theater

Yale School of Drama (1967–1970)

Winkler appeared in They Told Me That You Came This Way, [125] Any Day Now, Any Day Now, [125] and The Bacchae (as a member of the chorus). [125] During the summers, he and his Yale classmates stayed in New Haven, and opened a summer stock theater called the New Haven Free Theater. [1] They performed various plays including Woyzeck, where he portrayed the title role, [125] [1] and Just Add Water for improv night. [1] He also performed in the political piece, The American Pig at the Joseph Papp Public Theater for the New York Shakespeare Festival in New York City, [125] with classmates James Keach, James Naughton, and Jill Eikenberry. [1] In addition, he also appeared in a number of Yale Repertory Theatre productions while still a student, including, The Government Inspector , [125] The Rhesus Umbrella, [125] Don Juan , [125] Endgame , [125] and The Physicists . [125] He also appeared in Sweeney Agonistes and Hughie. [125]

Yale Repertory Theater (1970–1972)

After receiving his MFA in 1970, Winkler was one of three students from his graduating class of 11 who were invited to become a part of the Yale Repertory Theatre company. [1] He joined on June 30, 1970, [126] was paid $173 a week, [126] and appeared throughout the 1970–71 season. [1] [2] He performed in Story Theater Reportory, [3] Gimpel the Fool [3] and Saint Julian the Hospitaler and Olympian Games. [3] He also appeared in The Revenger's Tragedy , [3] Where Has Tommy Flowers Gone? , [3] Macbeth , [3] and Woyzeck and Play. [3] [127] He also appeared in a double feature of two works by Bertolt Brecht, The Seven Deadly Sins (ballet chanté) , and The Little Mahagonny during May–June 1971 and during January 20–29, 1972. The Hank Zipzer: The World's Greatest Underachiever series of American children's books (2003-2010) by actor Henry Winkler and writer Lin Oliver, tells the story of a dyslexic child, Hank Zipzer. The series is based on Winkler's difficulties with school as a child, and it is set in his childhood home. After finishing the main series, Winkler and Oliver created a prequel called Here's Hank. This series explores Hank's life as a second grader. In addition, Winkler and Oliver created a television series called Hank Zipzer that ran from January 2014 to December 2016 on the CBBC channel. HBO Max began streaming all three seasons of Hank Zipzer in May 2022 and Hank Zipzer's Christmas Catastrophe in December 2022.

The Bronze Fonz is a public artwork by American artist Gerald P. Sawyer, located on the Milwaukee Riverwalk in downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Bronze Fonz depicts Henry Winkler as "The Fonz," a character in the 1970s television series Happy Days, which was set in Milwaukee.

Benjamin Joseph Schwartz is an American actor and comedian. He is best known for his recurring role as Jean-Ralphio Saperstein on the NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation, his starring role as Clyde Oberholt on the Showtime series House of Lies, and his voice roles as Randy Cunningham in Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja, Dewey Duck in DuckTales, and Leonardo in Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. He also appeared many times in the CollegeHumor web series Jake and Amir.

Gísli Örn Garðarsson is an Icelandic actor and director. He is one of the founders of Vesturport, a theatre and film company based in Reykjavík, and is also sometimes a scriptwriter and producer. Before focusing on acting, he competed internationally as a gymnast.

<i>Hank Zipzer</i> (TV series) 2014 British TV series or programme

Hank Zipzer is a British children's television series created by Henry Winkler, based on the book series of the same name by Winkler and Lin Oliver. It stars Nick James as the 12-year-old dyslexic schoolboy, Hank Zipzer. Winkler also portrays Mr. Rock, Hank's music teacher. Unlike the books that took place in Winkler's native United States, the series takes place in London, in the United Kingdom. It also included a 2016 Christmas special, Hank Zipzer's Christmas Catastrophe. HBO Max began streaming all three seasons on May 13, 2022, and began streaming Hank Zipzer's Christmas Catastrophe on December 2, 2022.

<i>Better Late Than Never</i> (TV series) American reality-travel show

Better Late Than Never is an American reality travel show which aired on NBC and was produced by Universal Television, in association with Storyline Entertainment. The series is an adaptation of the South Korean Grandpas Over Flowers series. The cast includes four "seasoned" North American celebrities William Shatner, Henry Winkler, George Foreman, and Terry Bradshaw, accompanied by younger comedian Jeff Dye, as they travel overseas, experiencing new cultures and checking off their bucket lists. The series started productions in August 2015 and premiered August 23, 2016.
