In cricket, a five-wicket haul (also known as a "five-for" or "fifer") [1] [2] refers to a bowler taking five or more wickets in a single innings. This is regarded as a notable achievement by critics, especially in T20 cricket where a bowler can bowl a maximum of only 24 balls (4 overs). [3] [4] The Lanka Premier League (LPL) is a professional Twenty20 cricket league in Sri Lanka, which has been held since annually since its first season in 2020. [5]

The first player to take a five-wicket haul in the Lanka Premier League is Mohammad Amir. [6] He accomplished the feat on 7 December 2020, while playing for Galle Gladiators against Colombo Kings. [7] He finished the game taking 5 wickets for 26 runs. [8] Amir also holds the record of the least economic five-wicket haul, bowling at an economy rate of 6.50. The most economical five-wicket haul was taken by Wanindu Hasaranga of the B-Love Kandy, who claimed 6 wickets with an economy rate of 2.70. [9] His figures of 6/9 is also the best bowling figures in an LPL match till date, which he achieved on 17 August 2023, against Jaffna Kings. [10] Another bowler has taken a six-wicket haul in the LPL – Jeffrey Vandersay of Colombo Stars in 2021. [11]

Hasaranga is also the youngest bowler to pick up a five-wicket haul in the Lanka Premier League, which he did in the same match, at the age of 26. [12] In the same match, he also recorded the best strike rate in an innings for a five-wicket haul in the LPL. [13] He also became the first player to take a five-wicket haul while captaining his side. [14] The oldest bowler to grab a five-for in the LPL is Jeffrey Vandersay, who took 6 wickets for 25 runs against Kandy Warriors, on 17 December 2021, at the age of 31. [15] Two five-wicket hauls have been taken at Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium and R. Premadasa Stadium each, jointly the most for a single venue. [16]

In the four seasons played, five five-wicket hauls have been taken by different bowlers. Two five-wickets hauls have been taken by the players of the Galle Gladiators and the Colombo Stars, the joint highest for any team. On the other hand, Jaffna Kings have had two five-wicket hauls against them, which is more than any other team. The 2021 season saw the highest number of five-wicket hauls in a season. Two five-wicket hauls were taken in that season. [17]

On 31 July 2021, Udana announced his retirement from international cricket.

Aththachchi Nuwan Pradeep Roshan Fernando, commonly known as Nuwan Pradeep, is a professional Sri Lankan cricketer. Despite being a national cricketer, he had never actually played the game until he was 20 and most importantly never played with leather ball until his 20s. He shot into prominence after winning a bowling speed contest in 2007 and he was sent to Sri Lanka's Cricket Academy and also went onto earn a national test call up less than 3 years later. He is regarded as the most unconventional find of Sri Lanka cricket.

Paskuwal Handi Tharindu Kaushal is a professional Sri Lankan cricketer who plays for ODIs and Tests in international level. He is a right-arm off break bowler who also bats right-handed. He is a past student of Devapathiraja College, Rathgama.

Kariyawasam Indipalage Charith Asalanka is a Sri Lankan professional cricketer who plays all three formats of the game for the national team and also serves as the vice-captain of the national team in T20I and ODI. A left-handed batsman, Asalanka made his international debut for Sri Lanka in June 2021.

Pasqual Handi Kamindu Dilanka Mendis, popularly as Kamindu Mendis, is a professional Sri Lankan cricketer who plays for the national team,and for Colombo Cricket Club in domestic cricket.He is an ambidextrous bowler who has bowled both right and left-arm deliveries during the same over.He made his international debut for the Sri Lanka cricket team in October 2018.

Neketh Gedara Roshan Prabath Jayasuriya, commonly known as Prabath Jayasuriya, is a professional Sri Lankan cricketer who plays for the national team. In domestic matches, he plays for Colts Cricket Club and Jaffna Stallions.

The Colombo Kings is a franchise Twenty20 cricket team based in Colombo, Western Province, Sri Lanka, that competed in the inaugural Lanka Premier League in 2020. The team is owned by Murfad Mustafa, an Indian businessman based in Dubai. For the season, the team was coached by Rangana Herath. Angelo Mathews served as captain, and was also announced as the icon player. Andre Russell, a Jamaican, was named as the marquee foreign player in the inaugural season. English batsman Laurie Evans made the most runs, while Afghan bowler Qais Ahmad took the most wickets for the Lanka's league.

The Galle Gladiators is a franchise cricket team which played in the inaugural season of the Lanka Premier League. The team is based in Galle, Southern Province, Sri Lanka. The team remained under the captaincy of Pakistani cricketer, Shahid Afridi, for the first three matches. However, due to an emergency, the captain left the league for the remaining matches of the tournament, and Bhanuka Rajapaksa assumed the captaincy. The team was coached by Pakistani cricket coach Moin Khan. The team is owned by Pakistani organizer Nadeem Omar, who also owns the Pakistan Super League's Quetta Gladiators.

The Jaffna Stallions is a franchise cricket team which competed in inaugural season of Lanka Premier League (LPL). For the 2020 season, the team was captained by Thisara Perera and coached by Thilina Kandamby. The team qualified for the semi-finals after winning 4 out of 8 matches. However, the team had the highest run rate of all teams. They qualified for the final by defeating Dambulla Viiking in the semi-final. The team won the final by defeating the Galle Gladiators.

The 2022 Lanka Premier League also known as Mazaplay LPL T20, for sponsorship reasons, was the third edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) Twenty20 franchise cricket tournament in Sri Lanka. It was originally scheduled to take place from 31 July to 21 August 2022 with Sri Lanka Cricket initially having promised to conduct LPL tournament targeting the August window. The ODI series between Pakistan and Sri Lanka were scrapped due to the hosting of this tournament. However, in July 2022, the tournament was postponed due to the economic crisis in Sri Lanka, with the aim to play it later in 2022. The tournament was later rescheduled and held from 6 to 23 December 2022. The tournament also emphasized to promote and boost both the economy and international tourism.
