Last Thursday evening the students of Occidental College tendered a brilliant reception to the new president of the Institution, Rev. Elbert N. Condit, who a short time ago arrived from the North.
Occidental College was founded In 1887 under the auspices pf the Presbyterian Church, and has been conducted as a denominational school ever since Rev. E. N. Condit succeeded Prof. A. M. McPherson as president of the college in October, 1894.
President E. N. Condit who has been at the head of the college for the past two years, tendered his resignation and It was accepted. Prof. J.W. Parkhill, who for the past seven years has been in charge of the Latin and Greek departments, was elected president to succeed Prof. Condit.
The vacancy In the presidency of Occidental College, occasioned by the resignation of Prof. J. W. Parkhill, was filled last Monday by the election of Prof. Guy W. Wadsworth who signified his acceptance yesterday. He has been the popular vice-president.
Two hundred friends of Dr. Guy V. Wadsworth, the retiring president of Occidental College, attended a farewell reception given last night, under the auspices of the college faculty, in the Stimson Memorial Library... Dr. Wadsworth will depart next Tuesday evening for Omaha, where he assumes the presidency of Bellevue College, a Presbyterian institution of much vigor and rapid growth.
Dr. W. S. Young, pastor of Presbyterian Church, was chosen termporary president of Occidental College yesterday afternoon at a meeting held by the board of trustees. As secretary of the board, Dr. Young has worked faithfully to advance the interests of the school, and the present appointment is by way of recognition and honor. Provision was made for the choice of a successor to former President Wadsworth, who has gone to Bellevue College, Nebraska, and already Dr. Young has opened a correspondence with a prominent educator in the East, who will be tendered the presidency of the local Presbyterian school.
William S. Young, acting president of Occidental since the resignation, of Dr. Wadsworth some months ago, received the following telegram, signed by John IWillis Baer: "I heartily accept the privileges and (duties. Please extend personal greetings to the trustees, faculty and students. May God aid us in making Occidental the ever-increasing force for righteousness on the Pacific Coast I want yours for new progress on old lines." Dr. Young said last night that it had not yet been definitely settled as to when Mr. Baer would take up his active work, but that it would probably be in the fall.
Mr. Baer left New York Monday night and is expected to arrive here this afternoon to spend a few days in getting better acquainted with the friends and students of Occidental and in looking over the field of work which he Is soon to take up.

The news made public yesterday that Dr. John Willis Baer had resigned the presidency of Occidental College came as a great surprise to the public and his friends, and as a shock to the students of the college. When it was learned that he is suffering from nervous exhaustion brought about by his hard and persistent work in making Occidental College what it is today, genuine sympathy was felt for him. He left practically a complete work in the hands of the trustees. When he assumed the presidency October 28, 1906, the college, then located on a small campus at Highland Park, was in the hands of the biggest man, the trustees could find... Meanwhile the academic work will go on under the direction of Dean Thomas O. Burt.
Dr. Silas Evans, president of Ripon college, Wisconsin, will assume his new duties as president of Occidental college next August, it was announced today.

Dean Thomas G. Burt, of 5323 Aldama street, has been appointed acting president of Occidental College. Twice before he has occupied the position. When Dean Burt was asked if he will be made president of the college he replied: "I don't want the job; I already have enough troubles." His first appointment as acting president came when Dr. Baer took a year's vacation and went abroad. After Dr. Baer returned, he was taken ill and Dean Burt was again made acting president, which position he held until Dr. Evans arrived in 1917. A committee was appointed yesterday to look for a successor for Dr. Evans. "No small job, I say," was Dr. Baer's remark.
Dr. Remsen DuBois Bird, of San Rafael, was unanimously elected president of Occidental College at a Special meeting of the Board of Trustees held in the president's office Wednesday morning.

"The policy of friendly and helpful reception to the freshman class during the first days of college, which has been accorded new students in the past, will be continued this year," is the substance of an announcement in regard to the opening of Occidental College for the fall term, as given by Dr. Robert G. Cleland, who recently was made vice-president and acting president of the college in the absence of Dr. Remsen Dubois Bird. Dr. Bird, the president, is in Europe, and will return to the college in February.
