Pickering Town Football Club were first established in 1888 and for many years the club competed in local football leagues. Pickering eventually joining the Yorkshire Football League Division Three in 1972. [1] [2] When the Football League introduced the step system for non-league teams, the club were in the Northern Counties East Football League Division 1 at Step 6 of the non-league system (Level 10 overall).

In the non-league system where there is promotion and relegation there is the necessity for those in charge of scheduling matches to move some teams between different regional leagues at the same level to ensure as even a geographical spread as possible.
Of the available records, it shows the club joining the York League in the 1953–54 season. From those records, only the final positions have been recorded. [3]
Despite joining the Yorkshire League in the 1972–73 season, records show the club continued to compete in the York League until the end of the 1976–77 season [4]
The 1984–85 season saw the introduction of 3 points for a win.
The club's FA Vase 1st round 2nd replay win was played at a neutral venue in Ryhope, Sunderland.
The club lost their 2007–08 FA Vase 3 round tie against Winterton Rangers, but progressed when their opponents were thrown out for fielding an ineligible player.
The club's 2009–10 FA Vase 3 round replay against Dunkirk was a 2–2 draw in regulation play. The club won the tie 5–4 on penalties.
The club's 2011–12 FA Cup preliminary round replay against Liversedge was drawn 3–3 in regulation play. The club won the tie 5–4 on penalties.
The club's 2016–17 FA Cup Extra Preliminary round replay Sunderland Ryhope Colliery Welfare was drawn 3–3 in regulation play. The club won the tie 3–1 on penalties.
The club's 2018–19 FA Cup Preliminary round tie against Clitheroe was a home tie, but was actually played at Selby Town F.C.

The Football Association Challenge Cup, more commonly known as the FA Cup, is an annual knockout football competition in men's domestic English football. First played during the 1871–72 season, it is the oldest national football competition in the world. It is organised by and named after The Football Association. Since 2015, it has been known as The Emirates FA Cup after its headline sponsor. A concurrent Women's FA Cup has been held since 1970.

The 2019–20 FA Trophy was the 51st season of the FA Trophy, an annual football competition for teams at levels 5-8 of the English National League System. The competition consisted of two preliminary rounds, three qualifying rounds, and six proper rounds. All matches until the semi-finals were held as a single-match knockout format with reversed replays after first-leg matches drawn in regulation time. The semi-finals were scheduled to be two-legged, but due to their delay by the COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom they were shifted to single matches, with no replays. The final was a single-match held at Wembley Stadium and decided in extra time or penalties if tied after regulation. First-leg ties throughout the competition could be decided by extra time or penalties if both teams agree and notify the referee at least 45 minutes before kickoff, in accordance with FA Trophy Rule 11(a).
The 2020–21 Buildbase FA Vase was the 47th season of the FA Vase, an annual football competition for teams playing in Levels 9 and 10 of the English National League System. The competition was played with two qualifying rounds followed by six proper rounds, semi-finals, and the final played at Wembley Stadium. All ties this season were played to a finish on the day. For this season there were no replays in any of the rounds to minimise fixture congestion due to late start of the football season brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. If games finished level after 90 minutes, the match was decided by penalties to find the winner of the tie, apart from the Final where there were 30 minutes extra time followed by penalties if still level after the extra time period.
