List of Northampton Town F.C. seasons

This is a list of seasons played by Northampton Town Football Club in English football. It covers the period from the club's inaugural season in 1899, to the end of the last completed season. It details the club's achievements in all major competitions, together with the top scorers and the average attendances for each season. Details of the abandoned 1939–40 season and unofficial Second World War leagues are not included.

Contents

Northampton Town were founded in 1897, joining the Northamptonshire League and then the Midland League for two seasons before taking their place in the Southern League, and finally joined The Football League for the 1920–21 season.

William Kellock was a Scottish footballer who scored 77 goals in 298 league games in an 11-year career in the Football League in the 1970s and 1980s. He played for Aston Villa, Cardiff City, Norwich City, Millwall, Chelmsford City, Kettering Town, Peterborough United, Luton Town, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Southend United, Port Vale, and Halifax Town. He was twice named to the PFA Team of the Year and was promoted out of the Second Division with Wolves in 1982–83.

Steven Edward Phillips is an English former professional footballer who had a long career as a forward for a number of teams in the Football League in the 1970s and 1980s. He scored 200 goals from 562 league appearances.

Jack Fowler was a Welsh professional footballer, who played as a centre forward for Plymouth Argyle, Swansea Town and Clapton Orient as well as making six appearances for his country.

Robert Leslie Cooke was an English footballer and manager who played as a forward in the Football League, most notably for Peterborough United and Brentford. He represented England C at international level while playing non-League football. After retiring from football, Cooke managed Warboys Town and later became a scout.

The 2011 Football League One play-off final was an association football match which was played on 29 May 2011 at Old Trafford in Manchester, between Huddersfield Town and Peterborough United, to determine the third and final team to gain promotion from Football League One to the Football League Championship. The top two teams of the 2010–11 Football League One season, Brighton & Hove Albion and Southampton, gained automatic promotion to the Championship, while the teams placed from third to sixth position took part in play-offs. The winners of the play-off semi-finals competed for the final place for the 2011–12 season in the Championship. AFC Bournemouth and Milton Keynes Dons were the defeated semi-finalists, losing to Huddersfield Town and Peterborough United respectively.

Billy Hails was an English professional footballer.

The Nene derby is the name of the association football local rivalry in England between Northampton Town and Peterborough United, both of which are based along the River Nene. Fans of both clubs consider the other to be one of their main rivals. The first competitive match between the two clubs took place in 1946 but the first professional derby took place in 1960. As of 5 March 2024, there has been 76 competitive matches between the two teams, with 36 wins for Peterborough, 22 wins for Northampton and 19 draws.
