The Thai football champions are the winners of the highest league in Thai football, which is currently the Thai League 1. Teams in bold are those who won the double of League Championship and Thai FA Cup, or the Asian Double of League Championship and AFC Champions League in that season.

Football was introduced into Thailand in 1897. In 1916, King Vajiravudh founded "The Football Association of Thailand under Patronage of His Majesty the King." After that the association joined the FIFA in 1925 and AFC in 1957.

The Thailand national football team competed at the 1956 Olympics

The first football stadium, Suphachalasai Stadium, was built in 1935. King's Cup, the first football cup was introduced in 1968. And then two years later, Queen's Cup, a national cup competition, started in 1970.

Army United Football Club was a Thai football club under the stewardship of Royal Thai Army based in the Din Daeng District of Bangkok and is one of the oldest continuing football club in Asia until they decided to discontinue the club in the end of season 2019 after 103 years in existence. The club was founded in 1916 and was known as Royal Thai Army until November 2010. Their home stadium is known locally as the Thai Army Sports Stadium and more widely known around Asian circles as the Royal Thai Army Stadium of which has been host to numerous international youth matches due to its central Bangkok location. The club play in red shirts with red shorts and red socks. Despite finishing bottom of the Thai Premier League in 2010 they managed to regain their top-flight status after winning Group B of the Thai League Play-off in 2011.

Football is the most popular sport in Thailand. Although the professional football leagues are new to Thai people, football was introduced to Thailand as far back as 1897. Many Thais also watch football on local and paid-cable TV. Many matches, especially those in the English FA Premier League can be watched free on local channels. Thai channels broadcast every match of the 2006 World Cup.

The Thai League 1, often referred to as T1, is the top level of the Thai football league system. Contested by 16 clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with Thai League 2. Seasons run from August to May, with each team playing 30 games. It is sponsored by Toyota Motor Thailand and therefore officially known as the Hilux Revo Thai League. In the Thai League, most of the games are played during Saturdays and Sundays, with a few games played on Wednesdays and Fridays.
