The Supreme Court of India is the supreme judicial authority and the highest court of the Republic of India. It is the final court of appeal for all civil and criminal cases in India. It also has the power of judicial review. The Supreme Court, which consists of the Chief Justice of India and a maximum of fellow 33 judges, has extensive powers in the form of original, appellate and advisory jurisdictions.
The High Court of Bombay is the high court of the states of Maharashtra and Goa in India, and the union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. It is seated primarily at Mumbai, and is one of the oldest high courts in India. The High Court has circuit benches at Nagpur and Aurangabad in Maharashtra and Panaji, the capital of Goa.
The chief justice of India is the highest-ranking officer of the Indian judiciary and the chief judge of the Supreme Court of India. The Constitution of India grants power to the president of India to appoint, as recommended by outgoing chief justice in consultation with other judges as envisaged in Article 124 (2) of the Constitution, the next chief justice, who will serve until they reach the age of sixty-five or are removed by the constitutional process of impeachment.
Puisne judge and puisne justice are terms for an ordinary judge or a judge of lesser rank of a particular court. The term comes from a combination of the two French words, puis, "since, later" + né, and "born", which have been combined as French: puisné or puîné; meaning "junior".
Sujata Vasant Manohar is a former judge of the Supreme Court of India and a former member of the National Human Rights Commission of India.
The High Court of Delhi was established on 31 October 1966, through the Delhi High Court Act, 1966, with four judges, Chief Justice K.S. Hegde, Justice I. D. Dua, Justice H.R. Khanna and Justice S.K. Kapur. The High Court of Delhi is the Highest Court performing Judicial Functions in the NCT of Delhi at the State level. Below it are the Subordinate Courts, functioning for 9 Judicial Districts namely (1) Central (2) New Delhi (3) South (4) South-West (5) North (6) North-West (7) West (8) North-East (9) East. The High Court of Delhi is the highest judicial organ in a State. It gets its powers from Chapter V in Part VI of the Constitution of India.
The Gujarat High Court is the High Court of the state of Gujarat. It was established on 1 May 1960 under the Bombay Re-organisation Act, 1960 after the state of Gujarat split from Bombay State.
R. M. Lodha is a former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India. Before being elevated to the Supreme Court, he served as the chief justice of Patna High Court. He has also served as a judge in Rajasthan High Court and Bombay High Court. On 14 July 2015, the Supreme Court committee headed by RM Lodha suspended the owners of Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings from the Indian Premier League cricket tournament for a period of two years for alleged involvement in betting.
Harilal Jekisundas Kania was the first Chief Justice of India. He served as the Chief Justice of India from 1950 to 1951. He died while serving in office in 1951.
Sarosh Homi Kapadia was the 38th Chief Justice of India. He was the first chief justice born in independent India.
Dalveer Bhandari an Indian jurist. He is currently one of the judges of the International Court of Justice. He is a former judge of the Supreme Court of India and former chief justice of the Bombay High Court, he was also a judge of the Delhi High Court.
Ranjana Prakash Desai is a former judge of the Supreme Court of India and the head of the Delimitation Commission of India. She was previously a public prosecutor for the State of Maharashtra, and served as a judge on the Bombay High Court before her appointment from the Supreme Court. Following her retirement from the Supreme Court, Desai was the chairperson of the Indian Appellate Tribunal for Electricity.
Dipankar Datta is a judge of the Supreme Court of India. He is the former chief justice of the Bombay High Court and a judge of the Calcutta High Court.
Sharad Arvind Bobde is an Indian judge who served as the 47th Chief Justice of India from 18 November 2019 to 23 April 2021.
Uday Umesh Lalit is an Indian lawyer and former Supreme Court Judge, who served as the 49th Chief Justice of India. Previously, he has served as a judge of Supreme Court of India. Prior to his elevation as a judge, he practised as a senior counsel at the Supreme Court. Justice Lalit is one of the six senior counsels who have been directly elevated to the Supreme Court. He is currently ‘Distinguished Visiting Professor’ at Ashank Desai Centre for Policy Studies, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. and Distinguished Visiting Professor at West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences
Ajay Manikrao Khanwilkar is a former judge of the Supreme Court of India. He has also served as the chief justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court and Himachal Pradesh High Court and as a judge of the Bombay High Court.
Manoj Kumar Mukherjee was an Indian jurist. He served as the Chief Justices of the Bombay High Court and Allahabad High Court and former judge of the Supreme Court of India. He was the head of Mukherjee Commission.
Vijaya Kamlesh Tahilramani is a former Indian judge and prosecutor, who last served as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court. Previously, as a judge of the Bombay High Court, she notably upheld the conviction of several persons for the rape of a pregnant Muslim woman during the 2002 Gujarat riots, chastising investigative authorities for their inaction in the matter, and also refused parole for those convicted in the 1993 Bombay bombings. She retired in 2019, after refusing to accept a controversial transfer from the Madras High Court to the Meghalaya High Court.
Abhay Shreeniwas Oka is a judge of the Supreme Court of India. He is a former chief justice of the Karnataka High Court and judge of the Bombay High Court.
