County routes in Cattaraugus County, New York, are signed with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices-standard yellow-on-blue pentagon route marker. A handful of pre-MUTCD black-on-yellow rectangular markers still exist on the most remote county road intersections (Cattaraugus County did not switch to the MUTCD markers until the late 1990s). With one exception, county routes in Cattaraugus County are not signed with direction markers (e.g. North–South or East–West); one location on Route 10 in Coldspring has signs bearing North and South markers.
As a general rule, Cattaraugus County does not maintain routes within reservations, villages or cities. For routes that enter such municipalities, county maintenance (and the route number) usually stops at the municipal border, with the exceptions of CR 4, which enters the village of Gowanda, and CR 12, which does enter the village of Cattaraugus. Every town in Cattaraugus County except for Red House has at least one county route within its borders.

New York State Route 9G (NY 9G) is a state highway in the Hudson Valley of New York in the United States. It runs north from U.S. Route 9 (US 9) at Poughkeepsie, starting out as Violet Avenue, then follows the Hudson River mostly along the eastern side of the US 9 to Rhinebeck, where the two routes cross just north of the village. From this point onward, NY 9G runs on the western side of US 9, closer to the Hudson River, to Hudson. It ends at another junction with US 9 in the city. NY 9G initially extended from Rhinebeck to Hudson when it was assigned as part of the 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York. It was extended to its current length in the late 1930s, supplanting New York State Route 9F, an alternate route of US 9 between Poughkeepsie and Rhinebeck.
New York State Route 16 (NY 16) is a state highway in western New York, in the United States. It runs from the Pennsylvania state line, where it is one of the highest highways in the state in elevation, to downtown Buffalo. NY 16 is a major route through Erie County, despite the construction of the paralleling NY 400 expressway from East Aurora. In Cattaraugus County it also plays an important role, serving as the major connection from Olean to the Southern Tier Expressway. Between those two areas, and indeed for much of its length, it is a two-lane rural road.
New York State Route 39 (NY 39) is an east–west state highway in the western portion of New York in the United States. It begins and ends at intersections with U.S. Route 20 (US 20) 98.89 miles (159.15 km) apart. The western terminus of NY 39 is east of Fredonia in the Chautauqua County town of Sheridan, while the eastern terminus is in the Livingston County village of Avon. At its east end, NY 39 also ends at NY 5, which is concurrent to US 20 at this point. NY 39 serves several villages, including Gowanda and Geneseo, and intersects a handful of major north–south highways, such as US 219 in Springville and NY 19 near Pike. Most of the route is a two-lane highway that passes through rural, undeveloped areas.
New York State Route 279 (NY 279) is a north–south state highway in Orleans County, New York, in the United States. The southern terminus of the route is at an intersection with NY 98 north of the village of Albion in the town of Gaines. Its northern terminus is at a junction with NY 18 in Carlton near where NY 18 meets the western end of the Lake Ontario State Parkway. The entirety of NY 279 north of NY 104 is maintained by Orleans County; south of NY 104, the route is maintained by the New York State Department of Transportation. NY 279 is a rural connector highway that serves only one community, the hamlet of Waterport on the banks of Oak Orchard Creek in Carlton.
New York State Route 438 (NY 438) is a north–south state highway located entirely in Erie County, New York, in the United States. Though signed as north–south, the route runs in an almost east–west direction for 11.78 miles (18.96 km) between Gowanda and Irving through the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation. The southern terminus of the route is at an intersection with U.S. Route 62 (US 62) and NY 39 in Gowanda. Its northern terminus is at a junction with US 20 and NY 5 in Irving. The route was assigned in the mid-1940s. Although it is signed as a state route, the state does not maintain any of the route.
New York State Route 83 (NY 83) is a state route located entirely in Chautauqua County, New York in the United States. It extends from an intersection with U.S. Route 62 (US 62) in the hamlet of Conewango Valley to NY 60 in the hamlet of Laona, near Fredonia. Along the way, NY 83 intersects with NY 322 at Balcom Corners and serves the hamlet of Cherry Creek.
New York State Route 322 (NY 322) is a state highway in the Southern Tier of New York in the United States. The western terminus of the route is at an intersection with NY 83 in Balcom Corners, a hamlet within the Chautauqua County town of Villenova. Its eastern terminus is at a junction with U.S. Route 62 (US 62) in the Cattaraugus County town of Dayton. In between, the route passes through the village of South Dayton.
New York State Route 353 (NY 353) is a north–south state highway located within Cattaraugus County, New York, in the United States. It extends for 23.97 miles (38.58 km) from an intersection with NY 417 in the city of Salamanca to a junction with U.S. Route 62 (US 62) in the hamlet of Dayton. In between, the route traverses isolated and undeveloped areas of the county, save for the villages of Little Valley and Cattaraugus. In the latter, NY 353 intersects and briefly overlaps with NY 242.
New York State Route 242 (NY 242) is a state highway that runs across Cattaraugus County, New York, in the United States. Although signed as an east–west route, it takes a more northeast–southwest course across the county from NY 394 near the hamlet of Randolph in the town of Coldspring to NY 16 in Machias. The western end between Randolph and Little Valley was the western half of the short-lived New York State Route 17H. The eastern half of NY 17H was the southern end of NY 353 from Little Valley to Salamanca.
New York State Route 446 (NY 446) is a state highway in the Southern Tier of New York in the United States. The highway extends for 6.76 miles (10.88 km) on a northeast–southwest alignment from an intersection with NY 16 north of the hamlet of Hinsdale to a junction with NY 305 in the village of Cuba. It parallels the Southern Tier Expressway very closely for its entire length. NY 446 was originally designated as part of Route 4, an unsigned legislative route, in 1908. The Hinsdale–Cuba highway received its first posted designation in 1924 when it was included as part of NY 17. It was renumbered twice, becoming part of NY 63 in 1930 and NY 408 in the 1940s, before gaining its current designation on July 1, 1974.
New York State Route 417 (NY 417) is an east–west state highway located in the Southern Tier of New York in the United States. It begins at exit 20 of the Southern Tier Expressway in the city of Salamanca and ends at a junction with NY 415 in Painted Post, west of the city of Corning. At 105.25 miles (169.38 km) in length, NY 417 is the longest of the state highways that were formerly part of NY 17 before the construction of the Southern Tier Expressway. It also diverges the most from the current NY 17, coming within 100 feet (30 m) of the Pennsylvania state line at one intersection.
New York State Route 306 (NY 306) is a north–south state highway in western Rockland County, New York, in the United States. NY 306 runs from NY 59 in the hamlet of Monsey to U.S. Route 202 (US 202) in Ladentown, on the western boundary of the village of Pomona. The road is currently 5.33 miles (8.58 km) long; however, it originally extended south to the New Jersey state line and north to Willow Grove Road when it was assigned as part of the 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York.
New York State Route 154 (NY 154) was a state highway in Rensselaer County, New York, in the United States. It began at an intersection with U.S. Route 4 (US 4) in the city of Troy and ended at then-County Route 77 in the hamlet of Poestenkill. Along the way, it intersected NY 66 and NY 355. The route was assigned in the early 1930s and eliminated in 1980 as part of a highway maintenance swap between the state of New York and Rensselaer County. The portion of the highway between the Troy city line and NY 355 became County Route 130 while the part connecting NY 355 to Poestenkill became an extension of NY 355.
New York State Route 178 (NY 178) is an east–west state highway in Jefferson County, New York, in the United States. It extends for 10.23 miles (16.46 km) from an intersection with NY 3 by Aspinwell Corners in the town of Henderson to a junction with U.S. Route 11 (US 11) in the village of Adams. NY 178 meets Interstate 81 (I-81) at exit 41 0.5 miles (0.8 km) west of its junction with US 11. When NY 178 was assigned in the 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York, it continued east along modern County Route 189 (CR 189) to NY 177 in Rodman. This extension was eliminated in 1979. From the early 1930s to the late 1960s, NY 178 also continued west toward Lake Ontario on what is now County Route 178.
New York State Route 323 (NY 323) was a state highway in Erie County, New York, in the United States. The route was 5.24 miles (8.43 km) long and stretched from the town of Brant to the hamlet of Evans Center within the town of Evans. NY 323 began at an intersection with NY 249 and County Route 9 (CR 9) in Brant and headed north to a junction with NY 5 in Evans Center. In between, it passed over the New York State Thruway and intersected U.S. Route 20 (US 20).
New York State Route 368 (NY 368) was a state highway in Onondaga County, New York, in the United States. It was one of the shortest routes in the county, extending for only 1.69 miles (2.72 km) between NY 321 and NY 5 in the town of Elbridge. NY 368 was known as Halfway Road for the hamlet it served near its midpoint. The route was assigned in the 1930s and removed in 1980 as part of a highway maintenance swap between the state of New York and Onondaga County.
