Basel-Landschaft or Basel-Country, informally known as Baselland or Baselbiet, is one of the 26 cantons forming the Swiss Confederation. It is composed of five districts and its capital city is Liestal. It is traditionally considered a "half-canton", the other half being Basel-Stadt, its urban counterpart.

Claude Janiak is a Swiss politician of Polish origin, lawyer and President of the Swiss National Council for the 2005/2006 term. Member of the Social Democratic Party (SPS), he was elected to the National Council in 1999 in the canton of Basel-Land and reelected in 2003. In 2007, he was elected to the Swiss Council of States.

Thomas Jan de Courten is a Swiss businessman and politician. He currently serves as a member of the National Council for the Swiss People's Party (SVP) since 5 December 2011. Between 2003 and 2011, he served in the Cantonal Council of Basel-Landschaft, and as the congressional president for his party since 2007. He was also the president of the national economy and health commissions respectively.
