This is a list of provincial ministers of Zambia as of September 2021. All are members of the United Party for National Development. All ministers are elected members of Parliament except one who is a nominated minister by the President of the Republic of Zambia. [1]
The politics of Zambia takes place in a framework of a presidential representative democratic republic, whereby the president of Zambia is head of state, head of government and leader of a multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by the government, while legislative power is vested in both the government and parliament. Formerly Northern Rhodesia, Zambia became a republic immediately upon attaining independence in October 1964.
A member of parliament (MP) is the representative in parliament of the people who live in their electoral district. In many countries with bicameral parliaments, this term refers only to members of the lower house since upper house members often have a different title. The terms congressman/congresswoman or deputy are equivalent terms used in other jurisdictions. The term parliamentarian is also sometimes used for members of parliament, but this may also be used to refer to unelected government officials with specific roles in a parliament and other expert advisers on parliamentary procedure such as the Senate parliamentarian in the United States. The term is also used to the characteristic of performing the duties of a member of a legislature, for example: "The two party leaders often disagreed on issues, but both were excellent parliamentarians and cooperated to get many good things done."
Zambia is divided into 10 provinces for administrative purposes. Each province is headed by a minister appointed by the President and there are ministries of central government for each province. The administrative head of each province is the Permanent Secretary, appointed by the President. There are Deputy Permanent Secretary, heads of government departments and civil servants at the provincial level.
The prime minister of Zambia was the head of government of Zambia. From 1973 to 1975, Mainza Chona was the first person to hold the position following independence from the United Kingdom.
The Senate of Pakistan or Aiwān-e-Bālā Pākistān, constitutionally the House of the Federation, is the upper house of the bicameral Parliament of Pakistan. As of 2023, It has a maximum membership of 96, of which 92 are elected by the provincial legislatures using single transferable vote. Four represent the Federal Capital. Members sit for terms lasting six years, with half of the house up for election every three years. Unlike the National Assembly, the Senate is a continuing chamber and hence not subject to dissolution.
The Parliament of Pakistan is the supreme legislative body of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. It is a bicameral federal legislature, composed of the President of Pakistan and two houses: the Senate and the National Assembly. The president, as head of the legislature, has the power to summon or prorogue either house of the Parliament. The president can dissolve the National Assembly, only on the Prime Minister's advice.
The Government of South Africa, or South African Government, is the national government of the Republic of South Africa, a parliamentary republic with a three-tier system of government and an independent judiciary, operating in a parliamentary system. Legislative authority is held by the Parliament of South Africa. Executive authority is vested in the President of South Africa who is head of state and head of government, and his Cabinet. The President is elected by the Parliament to serve a fixed term.
A member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) is a representative elected to sit in a legislative assembly. The term most commonly refers to members of the legislature of a federated state or an autonomous region, but is also used for several national legislatures.
Zambia is divided into ten provinces, each administered by an appointed provincial minister. Each province is divided into several districts with a total of 116 districts in the nation. Each district contains one or several constituencies with a total of 156 constituencies in the nation. Each constituency contains several wards with a total of 1624 wards in the nation.
Muchinga Province is one of the ten provinces of Zambia. It is located in the northeast of the country and borders with Tanzania in the north, Malawi in the east, Eastern Province in the south, Central Province in the southwest, Luapula Province in the west, and Northern Province in the northwest. The administrative center of the province is Chinsali.
Daniel Munkombwe was a Zambian politician. He worked as a political organizer and administrator for the ZANC in Northern Rhodesia before and after independence. He was elected to Parliament for Choma constituency in 1973 and served for 19 years. In 2001, he was appointed Minister for the Southern Province by Levy Mwanawasa and continued in that and other government posts until 2015, having been subsequently appointed by Rupiah Banda and Michael Sata.
Obedingwa Mguni was a Zimbabwean politician who was a member of parliament representing the Mangwe constituency from 2013 to 2019.
Joseph Malanji is a Zambian politician and business executive who previously served as a member of the National Assembly for Kwacha constituency. He was Minister of Foreign Affairs between 2018 and 2021.
W.K. Mutale Nalumango is a Zambian educator and politician. She currently serves as the 14th Vice President of Zambia, having been appointed to the position in August 2021. Nalumango is only the second woman to hold this position, which is considered one of the most significant political roles in the country.
Sheal S. Mulyata is a member of the National Assembly of Zambia. She was elected in 2016 and 2021 for Rufunsa constituency. She is a United Party for National Development politician and was placed as the Provincial Minister for Lusaka Province in September 2021.
Brenda Mwika Tambatamba is a Zambian politician. She has been a member of the National Assembly of Zambia for Kasempa since 2016. She is a member of the United Party for National Development. She is the current Minister of Labour and Social Security of Zambia.
Zoliswa Albertina Kota-Mpeko is a South African politician from the Western Cape. A member of the African National Congress (ANC), she served as Deputy Minister of Human Settlements between May 2009 and May 2019. She served six terms in the National Assembly of South Africa.
Bowman Lusambo is a Zambian politician and a member of the Patriotic Front. He was appointed as the Provincial Minister for Lusaka Province and Provincial Minister for Copperbelt Province. He has also served as the Member of Parliament for Kabushi from August 2016 to August 2022. In 2022, his parliamentary seat was nullified by the Zambian Constitution Court, citing fraud and violence that led to his 2021 election.
Peter Simon Phiri is a Zambian politician. He is the current Provincial Minister for the Eastern Province of Zambia and the member of parliament for Malambo constituency. He is a member of the United Party for National Development (UPND).
Mwabashike Nkulukusa is a Zambian politician and businessman. He currently serves as the Member of Parliament for Katuba constituency and as the Provincial Minister for Central Province.
