There is no recorded history of printed newspaper prior to Rana rule in Nepal. The first-hand press was imported by Jung Bahadur Rana after his visit to Europe; however, it was used only after 58 years for printing. It was used to print religious books and government notices. [1]
The first Nepali language newspaper named Gorkha Bharat Jeewan was published in 1886 BS from Banaras. It was a monthly paper edited by Ram Krishna Barma. However, the printed copies of this magazine has not been found yet. [2] Sudha Sagar was the first media printed in Nepal. It was published monthly from Thahiti Kathmandu. [1] It started in Shrawan, 1955 BS (1898-1899). [3] It was edited by Pandit Naradev Pandey, Moti Krishna Sharma, and Kapil Dev. [2] Sudha Sagar was discontinued shortly afterwards. In 1901, the same editor, Nardev and Moti, started Gorkhapatra though Pashupat press from Thahiti, Kathmandu. [1]

The constitution of Nepal 2047 BS, guaranteed press freedom and the right to information to people. Two major newspapers Kantipur and The Kathmandu Post were published by the private sector were published in 2049 BS (1992-1993). [3] The list of notable current newspaper is below.

Mahendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev, was the ninth King of Nepal from 13 March 1955 until his death in 1972, which was due to heart attack as told in an interview by his personal physician Dr. Mrigendra Raj Pandey. Following the 1960 coup d'état, he established the partyless Panchayat system which governed the country for 28 years until the introduction of multiparty democracy in 1990. During his reign, Nepal experienced a period of industrial, political and economic change which opened it to the rest of the world for the first time after the 104-year-long reign of the Rana rulers, who kept the country under an isolationist policy, came to an end in 1951.
Krishna Prasad Bhattarai also known as Kishunji was a Nepalese political leader. He was one of the main leaders involved in transitioning Nepal from an absolute monarchy to a democratic multi-party system.
Siddhicharan Shrestha was one of the most prominent writers of Nepal. He contributed to the struggle against the autocratic Rana regime (1846–1951) through his writings. His revolutionary poetry aroused freedom fighters, and he was sentenced to 18 years in jail for his literary activities. He wrote in Nepal Bhasa and Nepali.
Durga Lal Shrestha is a Nepalese poet of Nepal Bhasa and Nepali. He was conferred with the title of Janakavi by Nepal Bhasha Parishad in 2003. He is considered as a progressive litterateur. He was awarded the Jagadamba Shree Puraskar in 2010 for "enriching Nepalese literature by writing very melodious songs, poems, poetry and children's literature in his mother tongue and Nepali language for the last six decades."

Gorkhapatra is the oldest Nepali language state-owned national daily newspaper of Nepal. It was started as a weekly newspaper in May 1901 and became a daily newspaper in 1961. It is managed by the Gorkhapatra Sansthan. The Rising Nepal is the sister newspaper of Gorkhapatra in English language.
Durganand Jha was a Nepalese democratic fighter who attempted to assassinate King Mahendra of Nepal in January 1962 in Janakpur in southeastern Nepal. Durga was captured after he threw a bomb on a motor-vehicle carrying the king. He threw bomb in a strict security of thousands of army and police at the Janaki Temple premises in Janakpur during his visit to the eastern Terai. He was hung to death in 2020 BS Magh 15 at Central Jail, Kathmandu. He was born at Jatahi, Janakpur. Jha was member of Nepali Congress. At the time of execution he was 21 years old.
Kantipur is a Nepali language daily newspaper, published from Kathmandu, Biratnagar, Nepalgunj, and Bharatpur of Nepal simultaneously. It was founded by Shyam Goenka. Kantipur's publishers report that the circulation of this newspaper is just above 453,000 copies per day. It is regarded as the most widely read newspaper in Nepal; according to an audience survey in 2016, over half of those who read newspapers in Nepal were readers of Kantipur, considerably more than any other newspapers. The newspaper is also a source of information of homeland for Nepali diaspora.
Nepal Bhasa movement refers to the struggle for linguistic rights by Newar speakers in Nepal in the face of opposition from the government and hostile neighbors. The campaign aims to increase the use of Nepal Bhasa in the home, education, government and business. Despite a high level of development, Newar culture and language are both under threat.
Sri Maharaja, Dev Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana was the Prime Minister of Nepal for 114 days in 1901. He was also the King of Lamjung and Kaski.
Motiram Bhatta was a Nepalese poet, singer, essayist, publisher, literary critic and biographer. He is considered the first biographer and literary critic of Nepali literature and is credited for starting the first private printing press in Nepal in c. 1888. He also introduced the Ghazal style of poetry and singing in Nepal. Bhatta was a polyglot and alongside Nepali, he had studied in Sanskrit, Persian, English and was also proficient in Bengali, Urdu and Nepal Bhasa.
Nepal Bhasa journalism began in 1925 with the publication of the magazine Buddha Dharma wa Nepal Bhasa. It was the first magazine to be published in Nepal Bhasa. It was published from Kolkata, India by Dharmaditya Dharmacharya.
Phatte Bahadur Singh (1902–1983) was a Nepalese poet and journalist who started the first daily newspaper in Nepal Bhasa. He suffered persecution and was jailed for his activities to develop his mother tongue.

Modanath Prasrit, also Modnath Prasrit is a Nepali writer, politician and political activist. A long time member of the Nepali communist movement, he became the Minister of Education in 2054 BS. His writings reflect his communist ideology. His book Devasur Sangram is particularly noted for its challenge to Hindu orthodoxy.

Nityaraj Pandey was a Nepalese writer. Mahakavi Devkota, a biography of Laxmi Prasad Devkota is one of his most notable work.
Bir Charitra is a Nepali fantasy novel written by Girish Ballabh Joshi. The first part of the novel was written in c. 1899 and was published in 1903 by Pashupat Press but soon the Rana government restricted the publication of other volumes. The complete all four parts of the novel was published only in 1965 by Jagadamba Press. It is considered to be the first novel of Nepali literature.
Nara Dev Pandey was a Nepalese poet, writer and publisher. He served as the first talukdar (manager) of Gorkhapatra, one of the earliest Nepali newspaper. He ran the first private printing press— Pashupat press located in Thahiti, Kathmandu. He was part of a literary team known as Moti Mandali, alongside Motiram Bhatta. He is considered one of the eminent figure of Secondary era of Nepali literature.
