The following is a list of conventional lines of rail transport in Bangladesh.

History

The first railway line in Bangladesh was laid in 1862 by the British Raj. At that time Bangladesh didn't exist and its land was part of the Bengal Presidency. On 15 November of that year, Eastern Bengal Railway, the predecessor of Bangladesh Railway, opened the first railway line from Darshana railway station to Jagati railway station. In 1885 another railway line was built from Narayanganj to Mymensingh. [1] In 1895, the railway line from Comilla to Chittagong was built. In 1914, a new railway was built from Akhaura to Tongi. After three years of construction, the railway line that connects Shayestaganj to Habiganj was opened in 1915. Another section from Shayestaganj to Balla was opened in 1929. Before the partition of India, many railway lines were built in Eastern Bengal, such as Chittagong–Dohazari, regional lines in Mymensingh region and others.

After 1947, East Bengal got 2606.59 km railway. Until Bangladesh became independent in 1971, the railways were operated by Pakistan Eastern Railway. [2] After independence this was taken over by Bangladesh Railway.

Brahmanbaria is a district in eastern Bangladesh located in the Chittagong Division. Geographically, it is mostly farmland and is topographically part of the Gangetic Plain. It is bounded by the districts of Kishoreganj and Habiganj to the north, Narsingdi District and Narayanganj to the west, Comilla to the south, and the Indian state of Tripura to the east. The East Bengal Mail was one of three trains operated between India and East Pakistan. The rail link was suspended at the outbreak of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965.

Prior to Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, India had no plans for large scale military action in East Pakistan. Since the Sino-Indian War of 1962, the primary objective of the Indian Army Eastern Command was the defence of the Indian northern and eastern borders, defending the "Shiliguri Corridor", and on combating insurgencies raging in Mizoram, Nagaland, Manipur and the Naxalites in West Bengal.

The Tongi–Bhairab–Akhaura line is a railway line connecting Tongi and Akhaura, via Bhairab Bazar in Bangladesh. There is a branch line from Bhairab Bazar to Mymensingh via Gouripur. These tracks are under the jurisdiction of Bangladesh Railway.

The Akhaura–Laksam–Chittagong line is a railway line connecting Akhaura and Chittagong, via Laksam in Bangladesh. There are branch lines from Laksam to Chandpur and Noakhali. This line is under the jurisdiction of Bangladesh Railway.

The Chilahati–Parbatipur–Santahar–Darshana line is a railway line connecting Chilahati and Darshana, via Parbatipur Junction, Santahar, Abdulpur, Azim Nagar station, Iswardi and Hardinge Bridge in Bangladesh. This track is under the jurisdiction of Bangladesh Railway.

The Burimari–Lalmonirhat–Parbatipur line is a 163.4 kilometres (101.5 mi) long railway line connecting Burimari and Parbatipur Junction in northern Bangladesh. It also connects to Kurigram and Ramna Bazar. This track is under the jurisdiction of Bangladesh Railway.

Rajshahi Railway Station is a railway station at Rajshahi, Bangladesh. The railway station is the main station of the city, and links to Dhaka via the Iswardi–Sirajganj line. The station is one of the most modern, largest and important stations of Bangladesh Railway along with Dhaka and Chittagong railway station. Headquarter of Western Zone of Bangladesh Railway is also located within the station complex.

Sylhet railway station is a railway station in Bangladesh. There are two types of rail lines in Bangladesh Meter gauge and Broad gauge. This station is connected with meter-gauge link on both sides from Chhatak and Dhaka. This railway station is situated in Sylhet city.

Simanta Express is an intercity train from Chilahati to Khulna. The train is conducted by Bangladesh Railway. The train serves from South-Western Bengal to North Bengal. Apart from the Simanta Express, the Rupsha Express also runs on this route.

Dhaka–Jessore line is a 172 km long under construction broad gauge railway. It is being constructed under the Ministry of Railways, Government of Bangladesh. The line will connect the capital of Bangladesh to Jessore via Dhaka District, Narayanganj District, Munshiganj District, Shariatpur District, Madaripur District, Faridpur District, Gopalganj District, Bangladesh, and Narail District. It is a project related to Padma Bridge.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Darshana–Jessore–Khulna line</span> Railway line in Bangladesh

Darshana–Jessore–Khulna line is a broad-gauge railway of Bangladesh Railway. The line is maintained and operated by West Zone.

Bhairab Bazar Junction railway station is a railway junction located in Bhairab, Kishoreganj District, Bangladesh. At least 3000 passengers use this railway junction regularly.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">West Zone (Bangladesh Railway)</span>

West Zone is a railway zone operated by Bangladesh Railway. 2,800 km of railway lines in Bangladesh are operated through four divisions in two Zones, West Zone being one of the two Zone. This Zone consists of Rangpur Division, Rajshahi Division, Padma Division, Khulna Division and Tangail District of Dhaka Division of Bangladesh. The head office of West Zone is located in Rajshahi.

Narayanganj–Laksam chord line is a proposed 90km-long dual gauge railway. It will be constructed under the Ministry of Railways, Government of Bangladesh. The line will directly connect Dhaka to Chittagong through Narayanganj, Munshiganj and Comilla District.
