History

Lotus News was launched on 11 October 2012 by a consortium headed by industrialist and Former BJP State General Secretary Dr.G.K.S.Selvakumar. [1] [ citation needed ]. It was the first Tamil news satellite channel to have its base outside Chennai and also the first satellite channel to have its base in Coimbatore. The channel has its slogan and motto உண்மை மலரட்டும்.

The Channel Introduced World's First Transgender News Anchor Padmini Prakash on 15 August 2014.

It also Introduced Visually Challenged Master.Sri Ramanujam as a News Anchor by Using Braille Method.

Controversies

The former Managing director Bharathi Mohan filed a cheating complaint against the Tamil Nadu BJP Secretary and Director of the Channel G.K. Selvakumar. The complaint stated that G.K Selva kumar had faked his signature and sold his shares over 5 crores. In response, Selvakumar said it was Bharathi Mohan's intention to defame him and said he would file a defamation case against mohan after a consultation with his lawyers. [2]

The director of the channel and BJP Secretary G.K Selvakumar was detained at the Coimbatore airport for carrying a bullet in his bag on June 26, 2018. Selvakumar plead that he had a licensed weapon and had carried the bag that contained the bullets by mistake. He was allowed to board the flight, after he handed over the bullet to his driver. The 1998 Coimbatore bombings occurred on Saturday, 14 February 1998, in the city of Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India. A total of 58 people were killed and over 200 injured in the 12 bomb attacks in 11 places, all within a 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) radius. The explosives used were found to be gelatin sticks activated by timer devices and were concealed in cars, motorcycles, bicycles, sideboxes of two-wheelers, denim and rexine bags, and fruit carts. Several bombs that failed to detonate were defused by bomb disposal squads of the Army, National Security Guards and Tamil Nadu Commando School. The bombings were apparently in retaliation to the 1997 Coimbatore riots during November – December the previous year, when Hindu fundamentalists groups killed 18 Muslims and 2 Hindus and looted several thousands of properties of Muslims following the murder of a traffic policeman named Selvaraj, by a member of the radical Islamist group Al Ummah. The main conspirator was found to be S A Basha, the founder of Al Ummah, an Islamic fundamentalist body. Investigators found out that the blasts were a part of larger conspiracy to target L.K.Advani, the leader of Bharatiya Janata Party on that day at 4 p.m in his election meeting.

Padmini Prakash is an Indian news anchor, actress and transgender rights activist. She became the first openly trans person to work as a news anchor in India when she joined the Tamil channel Lotus News Channel on 15 August 2014.

The 2004 Kalapatti violence refers to the violence against Dalits by dominant-caste villagers in the village of Kalapatti, Tamil Nadu on 16 May 2004. About 100 Dalit houses have been burned down by a mob of 200 villagers and Dalits who attempted to escape were attacked. The attacks lasted for 2 hours and 14 people were seriously injured in the violence including a man's arm reportedly hacked off.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2019 Pollachi sexual assault case</span>

The Pollachi sexual assault case refers to a case of rape and extortion of numerous women by a gang in Pollachi, Coimbatore in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The gang would entice women into isolated places after befriending them on social media and sexually assault them and filmed the act. The videos were later used to blackmail the women for sexual favors or money. The gang came into spotlight after the family of a 19-year-old college student who claimed to had been sexually assaulted and blackmailed complained to the police. According to media accounts, at least 200 women are sexually assaulted in the very same manner and the victims were college and school teachers, doctors, higher secondary school students from all over the state. On the mobiles of the accused, police said they discovered dozens of video recordings of women being abused at a farmhouse belonging to one of the accused and some were leaked.

Maridhas Malaichamy, known by his YouTube channel Maridhas Answers, is a right-wing YouTuber and social media influencer from Madurai, Tamil Nadu. He promotes the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) through his social media posts.

Thoppampatti is a small town located in Palani taluk of Dindigul district in Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is the headquarters of the Thoppampatti Panchayat Union in Tiruppur district. It is located 20 kilometers away from Dharapuram and 10 kilometers away from Palani in Erode-Dharapuram-Palani highway.
