History
The university has its roots in the parish school of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Canoas (CELSP), in Canoas, Rio Grande do Sul, founded in 1911. The first impulse towards the university was the creation of the Cristo Redentor College, in 1969 under the direction of Reverend Ruben Eugen Becker.
In March 1972, in an effort to expand its education in higher education, the Evangelical Lutheran Community of São Paulo founded an Administration College with fifty vacancies. In 1974, the Federal Council of Education authorized the operation of the Canoas Colleges.
In January 1988, the president of Brazil, José Sarney, allowed the creation of the Lutheran University of Brazil.

The Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul is a Brazilian public federal research university based in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul. UFRGS is among the largest and highest-rated universities in Brazil, having one of the largest number of scientific publications. From 2012 to 2019, the university was elected as the best federal university of Brazil. UFRGS has over 31,000 undergraduate students, over 12,000 graduate students, and more than 2,600 faculty members. As a Brazilian public federal institution, students do not pay tuition fees to enroll in courses offered by the university.
Gravataí is a Brazilian municipality near Porto Alegre at the Rio Grande do Sul State. Its population is approximately 280,000 people, making it the sixth most populous city in the state.
Canoas, which earned city status in 1939, is a municipality in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. BR-116 is a federal route of highways of Brazil and the longest highway in the country, with 4,542 km (2,822 mi) of extension. The road connect Fortaleza, Ceará, one of the largest Northeast Brazil metropolises, to the southern city of Jaguarão, Rio Grande do Sul, in the border with Uruguay. It is also the longest highway in the country to be completely paved. It is considered one of the most important highways in the country, along with BR-101.
The University of Santa Cruz do Sul is a Brazilian non-profit (communitary) private university located in the city of Santa Cruz do Sul, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, with four other campuses in Capão da Canoa, Sobradinho, Venâncio Aires, and Montenegro. The institution had its first college founded in 1964, but it was only in 1993 that it became a university. The University also has a preservation area, named "RPPN da Unisc", which has an area of 221,39 hectares and had its creation in the year of 2009, through Ordinance nº 16, of March 18, 2009.
