Admiral Madhvendra Singh,PVSM,AVSM,ADC was Chief of Naval Staff of the Indian Navy between 29 December 2001 and his retirement from service on 31 July 2004. He had by that date completed over 41 years of service. [1] He was also the Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee from 2002 to 2004 [2]
Madhvendra Singh is a son of Major General K Bhagwati Singh and was educated at St. Xavier's School,Jaipur,in the Indian state of Rajasthan. His military career began in July 1958 when he joined the National Defence Academy,from which he moved to the Indian Navy in January 1963. [1]
He won various awards early in his naval career and chose to specialise in Gunnery,for which purpose he subsequently attended courses at the National Defence College in New Delhi,as well as abroad at institutions such as the Royal Military College of Science at Shrivenham,United Kingdom,the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington,Tamil Nadu and the Naval War College at Newport,USA. [1] He was promoted to lieutenant-commander on 16 February 1973 and to commander on 1 July 1977. [3] [4]
Aside from his numerous staff appointments,Singh commanded INS Viraat,INS Ranvir and INS Talwar,which are an aircraft carrier,a guided missile destroyer and a frigate,respectively. He also commanded the Naval Academy at Kochi. [1] He was promoted to captain on 1 July 1983, [5] and was promoted to rear admiral on 13 September 1990. [6]
Active service operations in which Singh was involved include the 1961 actions in Goa and in both the 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pakistani wars. His later operations included the 1987 Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka and acting as commander of the Western Maritime Theatre during the Kargil War of 1999. [1]
Singh has been awarded both the Param Vishist Seva Medal and the Ati Vishist Seva Medal for his service. [1]
He is married to Kaumudi Kumari and has a daughter and a son.
Admiral Laxminarayan Ramdas,PVSM,AVSM,VrC,VSM,ADC was an Indian naval officer who was a flag officer of the Indian Navy. Ramdas first served in the Indian Navy in 1953,before being promoted as a flag lieutenant to Ram Dass Katari,the first Indian Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral. In the Indo-Pakistani war of 1971,he was involved in a naval blockade of East Pakistan,hindering attempts to evacuate 93,000 troops and leading to East Pakistan's surrender. During his service in the military confrontation,he was awarded the Vir Chakra. Ramdas later served as the 13th Chief of Naval Staff from 1990 to 1993.

Admiral Sushil Kumar Isaacs,PVSM,UYSM,AVSM,NM was an Indian Navy Admiral who served as Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) of the Indian Navy. He was the Director of Naval Operations during Operation Pawan and Operation Cactus and was the CNS during the Kargil War.
Admiral Sardarilal Mathradas 'Charles' Nanda,PVSM,AVSM was an Indian Navy admiral who served as the 6th Chief of the Naval Staff from 1 March 1970 until 28 February 1973. He led the Indian Navy during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 and successfully executed a naval blockade of both West and East Pakistan,helping India achieve an overwhelming victory during the war. For the important role he played in the war,the Government of India awarded him the Padma Vibhushan,India's second-highest civilian award. Nanda is recognised as one of the most notable commanders in the history of the Indian Navy.

Admiral Oscar Stanley Dawson was a four-star admiral in the Indian Navy. He served as the 10th Chief of the Naval Staff from 1 March 1982 to 30 November 1984. From 1983 until his retirement,he also served as the chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee of the Indian Armed Forces. He previously served as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (FOC-in-C) of the Southern Naval Command and Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet (FOCEF). Admiral Sourendra Nath Kohli,PVSM was an Indian Navy admiral who served as the 7th Chief of the Naval Staff from 1 March 1973 until 29 February 1976. Kohli served as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (FOC-IN-C) of the Western Naval Command during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971 and successfully led Indian Navy's Western Fleet in Operation Trident and Operation Python against the Pakistan Navy fleet in Karachi. His prior commands include those as the commanding officer of INS Mysore (C60) and INS Rana (D115).

He was the Fleet commander of the Western Fleet during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971,for which he was awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal. He later led the Southern Naval Area and then served as the chairman and managing director of Mazagon Dock Limited.
