Malekurish St. George Monastery is a Malankara Jacobite Syriac Orthodox Church situated at a hilltop near Puthenkurishu, Ernakulam District, Kerala. The monastery was established by L.L Mor Yulius Elias Qoro (Patriarchal delegate to Malankara). The Malankara Syrian Orthodox Seminary began functioning in this monastery and later moved to Udayagiri. The monastery is the final resting place of L.L Catholicose Baselios Paulose II. [1] [2] In 2019, a retreat house named Khanema Hanna Home was consecrated by Ignatius Aphrem II Patriarch near to the Monastery. [3]

Kerala State in southern India

Ignatius Aphrem II 123rd Syriac Orthodox Patriarch

Ignatius Aphrem II is the patriarch of the Syriac Orthodox Church. He became the 123rd Syriac Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch when he was enthroned as patriarch in Damascus on May 29, 2014. Before his election to the patriarchate, he was Archbishop for the Eastern United States of America, and known as Mor Cyril Aphrem Karim in that post. In that role, he established 11 new parishes, introduced a number of new programs for the youth, and worked for inter-church unity.

Syriac Orthodox Church The Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch, or Syriac Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East, is an Oriental Orthodox Church tracing its origin‎ to Antioch by Saint Peter and Saint Paul in the 1st century.

The Syriac Orthodox Church, or Syriac Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East, is an autocephalous Oriental Orthodox church established by Severus of Antioch in Antioch in 518 A.D., organised by Jacob Baradaeus, while tracing its history to Antioch by Saint Peter and Saint Paul in the 1st century, according to its tradition. The Church uses the Divine Liturgy of Saint James, associated with Saint James, the "brother" of Jesus and patriarch among the Jewish Christians at Jerusalem. Syriac is the official and liturgical language of the Church based on Syriac Christianity. The primate of the church is the Syriac Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch currently Ignatius Aphrem II since 2014, seated in the Cathedral of Saint George, Bab Tuma, Damascus, Syria.

He became a deacon at the age of 10, a priest at the age of 18, and a bishop when aged 28. He died at the age of 54 and was buried at St. Peter and St. Paul's Church, Parumala, in Kerala, India. In 1947, he was declared a saint by the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, making him the first canonised Christian saint from India. In 1987, the Syriac Orthodox Church also recognised him as a saint.

Baselios Thomas I Catholicoi of the East

Baselios Thomas I Maphrian is an Indian bishop and primate of the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church, an autonomous Catholicate under the supreme ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the Syriac Orthodox Church. He was enthroned on 26 July 2002 by Syriac Orthodox Patriarch Ignatius Zakka I Iwas, Patriarch of Antioch and All the East in a ceremony held in Damascus, Syria. The office of the Maphrian has been vacant between 1996 (date of death of Baselios Paulose II Catholicos and 2002.

The Jacobite Syrian Christian Church also known as the Malankara Jacobite Syrian Christian Church, the Malankara Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church, or the Syriac Orthodox Church of India, is an autonomous Oriental Orthodox Church based in the Indian state of Kerala, and is an integral branch of the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch. It recognizes the Syriac Orthodox Patriarch Of Antioch and all the East, Ignatius Aphrem II seated in the Cathedral of Saint George, Bab Tuma, Damascus, Syria, as its Supreme Head. It functions as a largely autonomous unit within the church, under the authority of the Catholicos of India, Baselios Thomas I. Currently, this is the only church in Malankara which has a direct relationship with the Syriac Christians of Antioch, which has continued from after the schism and they continue to use the West Syriac Rite Liturgy of Saint James.

"Naheero" Mor Themotheos Thomas is the Metropolitan of Kottayam Diocese and Secretary to the Holy Episcopal Synod of the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church. Mor Themotheos Thomas was ordained as the Metropolitan of the Outside Kerala Diocese on 3 January 1991 by Mor Baselios Paulose II Catholicos of the East .

Geevarghese Dionysius of Vattasseril Indian Christian saint and bishop

Geevarghese Mar Dionysius of Vattasseril, born Geevarghese was the Malankara Metropolitan (primate) of the Malankara Orthodox Church. Vattasseril Geevarghese Mar Dionysius is popularly known as "Malankara Sabha Bhasuran", a title which the Church bestowed on him in recognition of his contribution to Malankara Church. Athanasious Paulose popularly known as 'Valiya Thirumeni', was the Metropolitan of the Jacobite Syrian Church for nearly four decades. Valiya Thirumeni was the founder of many spiritual organizations in the church like the Sunday School Association, the Mar Gregorios Students movement, the Brotherhood of St. Antonios and the St. Mary's Sisterhood. Consecrated as Metropolitan for the Angamaly diocese in 1910 by Patriarch Ignatius Abded Aloho II, he became the Malankara Metropolitan of the Malankara Jacobite Syriac Orthodox Church in 1918, until his death on 25 January 1953 at the age of 84.

Malankara Malpan Arch Corepiscopa Curien (Kurian) Kaniyamparambil was a priest in the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church and a scholar in Syriac language, who translated the Bible from ancient Peshitta text to Malayalam (വിശുദ്ധഗ്രന്ഥം) for the first time. This is the official bible used by Malankara Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church.
