  1. In October 1308, Pope Clement V forbade all commerce with the Mamluks, a prohibition reinforced in 1312 when the Knights of Rhodes were commissioned to capture any Christian vessel violating the ban. [26] Both Venice and Genoa stopped all publicly-funded expeditions to Mamluk ports, but private ventures to Egypt continued until prohibited by the Venetian government in 1324. [27]
