Medusa is the fifteenth studio album by British gothic metal band Paradise Lost, released on 1 September 2017 [1] via Nuclear Blast. [2]
According to guitarist Greg Mackintosh the album is "be slower, sludgier and more doom-filled than ever before". He also considered it "eight riff-laden monster tracks of sheer Northern misery". [2] Meanwhile, front man Nick Holmes described the record as "...definitely our heaviest album; the heaviest we’ve done. The idea was to keep it simple but dark and heavy, and I think we’ve achieved that." Regarding the album title, he commented that "...when Gregor writes songs, he gives them working titles, so he called one song Medusa. There’s no real meaning to it. It’s not something I would use in a song and wouldn’t use as a title either. I liked the thought though. When we were kids, Medusa was the scariest character we knew. As I looked into it, I found a lot of different metaphorical meanings that she represents. There was one sentence I read which was ‘Attempts to avoid looking into her eyes represent avoiding the ostensibly depressing reality that the universe is meaningless’, which made a lot of sense to me. To me, this is what Medusa stood for. There are many different interpretations, but this was mine. ” [3]
With the track "No Passage for the Dead" Holmes expressed his skeptical attitude towards the belief in the afterlife, calling it "a ridiculous man-made notion, [...] initially a theory invented to profit clever individuals, aimed at weak, frightened people." He conceded that not sharing this belief is not "a nice thought", but on the other hand could "make you appreciate the time you have, and live life to the fullest." [4]
In support of the album's release, the band toured Europe during the Fall of 2017, with support from Pallbearer and Sinistro. In December, an Australian tour followed (their first in over six years), while also gradually announcing a UK tour in February, multiple festival slots for the Summer of 2018 and a Central/South American tour in September. [5]

Medusa received high critical praise. Andy Walmsley of Terrorizer gave the album eight and a half points out of ten and considered it "one of the darkest, heaviest, and doomiest albums of their career", with "some of the most gloriously grim riffs, cruelly catchy melodies, and spine-tingling vocals (both harsh and clean) that the band have ever recorded." [4] Dom Lawson, comparing Medusa to its predecessor album The Plague Within in his positive review in Metal Hammer , thought that "to a certain extent Medusa is simply more of the same. Only slower and heavier." [8] He concluded: "This is still the sound of noble veterans driving the dark heart of their music forwards and onto new terrain. It's just that a dark and scary world needs music that speaks the truth about mankind's accursed frailty. Few do it better, or with more monstrous power, than this."

Paradise Lost is an English gothic metal band that formed in 1988 in Halifax, considered to be among the pioneers of the death-doom genre, and regarded as the main influence for the later gothic metal movement. Bands that have cited Paradise Lost as an influence, or have covered them, include My Dying Bride, Anathema, The Gathering, Amorphis, Cradle of Filth, Katatonia, Moonspell, Lacuna Coil, HIM, Nightwish and many others. As of 2005, Paradise Lost have sold over two million albums worldwide.

Tomas Haake made his return as the studio drummer for the record after the Drumkit from Hell drum software was used on Catch Thirtythree. It is also the first album on which bassist Dick Lovgren performs despite having been a member of the band since 2004; this is due to the bass having been digitally programmed on the previous album, Catch Thirtythree, and the bass having been performed by guitarist Fredrik Thordendal on the previous I EP. The release of the album was followed by their first world tour. A video was filmed for a shorter version of the song "Bleed". A two-disc vinyl re-issue was released on 22 March 2019 through Nuclear Blast. A remastered version was released 31 March 2023 for the 15th anniversary through Atomic Fire.

Surgical Steel is the sixth full-length album by British death metal band Carcass. The album was released on 13 September 2013 in Europe, 16 September in the UK, and 17 September in North America, via Nuclear Blast. Surgical Steel is Carcass' first studio album since Swansong (1996), and their first to feature Dan Wilding as the replacement of original drummer Ken Owen, although the latter does provide backing vocals on the album. This was also the band's first album since Symphonies of Sickness (1989) to be recorded as a three-piece, and their first one to reach the Top 50 in UK album charts.

Hammer of the Witches is the eleventh studio album by English extreme metal band Cradle of Filth. It was released on 10 July 2015 and is their first release under record label Nuclear Blast. Hammer of the Witches features the band's new line-up following the departure of Paul Allender and James McIlroy, which includes new guitarists Marek 'Ashok' Šmerda and Richard Shaw and new keyboardist and female vocalist Lindsay Schoolcraft.
Archangel is the tenth studio album by American heavy metal band Soulfly. It was released on August 14, 2015, through Nuclear Blast Entertainment. It is the band's shortest album to date, running thirty-six and a half minutes. It is the band's last album to feature bassist Tony Campos, who left the band shortly after recording to join Fear Factory. With a peak position of number 130 on the Billboard 200, it is Soulfly's second-lowest charting album to date. The statistic is common with the decreasing number of album sales worldwide in all genres of music, as digital releases have taken over the market. The ensuing "We Sold Our Souls To Metal" Tour to promote Archangel's release featured Soulfly playing as many as 7 songs from the album live each night, which is the first time since the Primitive Tour that the band has played the majority of a new album live.

AmeriKKKant is the fourteenth studio album by industrial metal band Ministry, which was released on March 9, 2018. It is their first release on Nuclear Blast, and marked the longest gap between studio albums in the group's entire career; at five years, following From Beer to Eternity (2013). Catharsis is the ninth studio album by American heavy metal band Machine Head, released on January 26, 2018. The album is the first to be credited as completely co-written by all of the band's members since The More Things Change... (1997). Catharsis saw the band stylistically returning to the nu metal-inspired sound of their previous albums The Burning Red (1999) and Supercharger (2001). We Are Not Your Kind is the sixth studio album by American heavy metal band Slipknot. Recorded at EastWest Studios in Hollywood, California with co-producer Greg Fidelman, it was released on August 9, 2019, by Roadrunner Records. The title is taken from a lyric in the song "All Out Life", which was released as a standalone single in 2018 and features as a bonus track on the Japanese edition of the album. We Are Not Your Kind is the only Slipknot album to be recorded as an eight-member band, as their former percussionist Chris Fehn was fired from the band in March 2019 after suing the group for alleged unpaid royalties.
Obsidian is the sixteenth studio album by British gothic metal band Paradise Lost. It was released on 15 May 2020 via Nuclear Blast. Music videos were released for the songs "Darker Thoughts" and "Fall from Grace". Metal Hammer named it as the 11th best metal album of 2020. Obsidian is the band's last album to feature Waltteri Väyrynen on drums, who went on to join Opeth in 2022.
Övergivenheten is the twelfth studio album by Swedish melodic death metal band Soilwork, released on 19 August 2022 via Nuclear Blast. It marks the first album with new bassist Rasmus Ehrnborn who joined as a touring member for the previous album Verkligheten cycle and became a permanent member in 2022, also making this album the first recorded as a six-piece since 2013's The Living Infinite. This was the last album to feature guitarist David Andersson who died on 14 September 2022.
