Meher Afroz Shaon (born 12 October 1981) [1] is a Bangladeshi actress, director, Dancer and playback singer. She won Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for her performance in the film Krishnopokkho (2016). [2] She was the wife of writer and director Humayun Ahmed. [3]

Early life

Shaon was born to Mohammad Ali, an engineer, and Tahura Ali, [4] who was a member of parliament from Constituency 319 of the 9th Bangladesh Parliament. [5]

Shaon studied at Viqarunnisa Noon School and College. She obtained a SSC and a HSC in 1996 and 1998 respectively. She also studied in BAF Shaheen College Dhaka. She then enrolled at the University of Asia Pacific and received a Bachelor of Architecture degree in 2008.

Career

Shaon was an enlisted artist of Bangladesh Television (BTV) and began her career acting as a child artist in BTV drama Swadhinota Amar Swadhinota in 1988. She started working with Humayun Ahmed in a drama named Jononee in 1991. She was in drama serial Nokkhotrer Raat in 1996 and Aaj Robibar in 1999. She appeared in Srabon Megher Din directed by Humayun Ahmed the same year.

Personal life

Shaon was married to Humayun Ahmed, from 2004 until his death in 2012. [4] She has two sons - Nishad Humayun and Ninith Humayun. [6]

Criticism

Shaon married Humayun Ahmed, a famous Bangladeshi writer and film director, and was criticized by Humayun's fan n readers. They blame Shawon for Humayun Ahmed's first marriage divorce. They claim that at the instigation of Shawon, Humayun Ahmed divorced his wife Gultekin and married his own daughter's friend. [7] The other side denied this. They claim that everyone has a personal life and everyone should be given that personal freedom

Beside directing several movies, Shaon also began to script some movies. As of March 2018, she was drafting scripts of Gouripur Junction and Nokkhotrer Raat. [11]

The film's adapted screenplay was written and directed by Meher Afroz Shaon and starring Riaz, Tania Ahmed, Ferdous Ahmed, Wahida Mollick Jolly and Faruque Ahmed. This is the debut film by the director. The storyline revolves around two star-crossed lovers who are not destined to be together.

Debi : Misir Ali Prothombar or simply Debi is a 2018 Bangladeshi supernatural thriller film based on Humayun Ahmed's novel of the same name. It is directed by Anam Biswas, starring Chanchal Chowdhury as Misir Ali, Jaya Ahsan, Iresh Zaker, Animesh Aich and Sabnam Faria. Chandrokotha is a 2003 Bengali drama film written and directed by Humayun Ahmed. Produced and distributed by Nuhash Chalachitra the film starred Ferdous Ahmed, Meher Afroz Shaon, Asaduzzaman Noor, Champa, Ahmed Rubel, Shadhin Khosru, Dr.Ezazul Islam and Monira Mithu in the lead role. Adnan is a Bangladeshi film actor. He won Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Child Artist for the film Megher Onek Rong (1976). Adnan was the first awardee of best child artist category in 1976.

The Salanga massacre is commemorated annually in Bangladesh in memory of an event in which several hundred protesters were killed, on 27 January 1922, when fired on by British Indian police.The event, not well documented, was revived with the rediscovery in the late 20th century of "a rarely found account of Abdur Rashid titled 'Shadhinota Shangramer Rakta Shiri Salanga " which stated that thousands of people died and that the bodies were thrown into the Bangali river or buried in a mass grave.

<i>Golui</i> 2022 Bangladeshi film

Golui is a 2022 Bangladeshi periodical romantic film directed by SA Haque Alik and co-produced by Khorshed Alam Khosru. It has been made on the basis of the traditional boat race of rural Bengal and the life of the people of a vast village. The film stars Shakib Khan, Puja Cherry, Azizul Hakim and Suchorita in the lead roles. The cast also includes Fazlur Rahman Babu, Suchorita, Ali Raj, Jhuna Chowdhury, Somu Chowdhury in supporting roles.

"Ekta Chilo Sonar Konya" is a song from the 1999 Bangladeshi film Srabon Megher Din. The lyricist of this folk music was Humayun Ahmed. Subir Nandi sang this song to the tune with music arrangement of Maksud Jamil Mintu. The song is considered to be the most popular song used in the film. The song was released under label of Sangeeta Music along with other songs from the audio album. Mahfuz Ahmed lip-synced in the scene of this song in the film. Maksud Jamil Mintu and Subir Nandi won the National Film Award for music arrangement and vocals.
