Melton railway station is a regional railway station on the Ararat line, part of the Victorian railway network. It serves the western suburb of Melton South, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Melton station is a ground level premium station, featuring two side platforms. It opened on 2 April 1884.

History

Melton station opened when the railway line from Braybrook Junction was extended. Like the town itself, the station was named after Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire, England. [2] [3]

In 1886, the line was extended westward to Parwan and, being on a single track section, the station was the site of a crossing loop from that time. By 1889, the station had an interlocked signal box, single passenger platform, and a three-road yard. There was a goods shed opposite the passenger platform. [4]

In 1962, flashing light signals were provided at the Exford Road level crossing, located nearby in the up direction from the station. [5] with boom barriers provided in 1990. [5]

In 1987, the yard was rationalised and became just a main line and crossing loop. In 1991, a second platform was added. [6] In 1998, the station building was refurbished.

In 2005, as part of the Regional Fast Rail project, control of the signals was transferred to the Ballarat signal box. [7] The station retains the lever frame for historical purposes.

First announced by the Andrews State Government in 2018, the station is set to be integrated into the metropolitan railway network, as part of the Western Rail Plan. [8]

As part of the Regional Rail Revival project, 18 km of track was duplicated between the Deer Park West junction and Melton. [9] [10] The duplication was completed in late 2019, coinciding with the opening of Cobblebank. [5] [11] [12]

On 6 October 2022, it was announced that four level crossings will be removed and Melton station will be rebuilt. Initially, it was announced that all four level crossing were going to be removed in 2028, then in June 2023, it was fast tracked for removal in 2026. [13] [14] Initially, Level Crossing Removal Project announced that Melton station will be lowered, but then, it was announced that the station will be elevated. On 23 March 2024, early concept designs for Melton station were released. [15] On 2 October 2024, final designs for Melton station were release, the station will include four platforms at the elevated station, Platforms 2 and 3 will be an island platform and Platforms 1 and 4 will be side platforms, the third and fourth platforms are to accommodate future electric services for Melbourne suburban trains. [16]

The Regional Rail Revival is a joint initiative between the Australian federal government and the Victorian state government to upgrade all regional railway lines in Victoria. The project has an estimated total cost of A$4 billion. A$2.3 billion of the project's total cost is being funded by the Australian Government. It was delivered by Rail Projects Victoria (RPV) until April 2024, and then by the Level Crossing Removal Project. The project is guided by the 2016 Regional Network Development Plan, which outlines the short, medium and long-term priorities for a modernised regional rail network.
