Metzgeria is a genus of thalloid liverworts in the family Metzgeriaceae. [1]

Taxonomy

The genus was named in honor of Johann Metzger (1771–1844), a German copper engraver and art restorer from Staufen im Breisgau, in Baden-Württemberg, a friend of Giuseppe Raddi and pupil of the great Florentine engraver Raffaello Sanzio Morghen (1753–1833). [2]

Species

Species may be either monoicous or dioicous. Approximately 120 to 200 species of Metzgeria have been described and the following species are currently recognised: [3]

Hooker sailed on HMS Erebus as assistant surgeon. It was the first in a series of four Floras in the Flora Antarctica, the others being the Botany of Fuegia, the Falklands, Kerguelen's Land, Etc. (1845–1847), the Flora Novae-Zelandiae (1851–1853), and the Flora Tasmaniae (1853–1859). They were "splendidly" illustrated by Walter Hood Fitch.
