Monosmilus is an extinct genus of prehistoric anchovy relative. It contains a single species, M. chureloides from the Middle Eocene (Lutetian)-aged Domanda Formation of Punjab, Pakistan. [1] [2] [3]

Monosmilus was a large, predatory stem group-anchovy that may have reached up to 1 metre (3.3 ft) in length. Its most distinctive feature was a single, massive fang projecting downwards from vomerine region of the upper jaw. The genus name "Monosmilus" means "single knife" in Ancient Greek, referencing this fang, while the specific epithet "chureloides" references the Churel, a fanged, shapeshifting demon of Pakistani folklore. The closest relative of Monosmilus is Clupeopsis , another stem-anchovy known from the earlier Eocene of Belgium, which had a similar "saber tooth"; no other fish, extant or extinct, is known to have a similar dentition to these two genera. Monosmilus and Clupeopsis together comprise a unique clade basal to modern anchovies, which are colloquially referred to as "saber-toothed anchovies". Unlike modern anchovies, which are planktivorous, the saber-toothed anchovies likely preyed on other fish; however, due to the lack of a modern analogue, the function of the saber tooth during feeding is uncertain. The saber-toothed anchovies were part of a wider radiation of predatory marine fish during the early Paleogene, in the aftermath of empty ecological niches remaining from the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event. However, despite their unique adaptations, they went extinct shortly afterwards. [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]

Smilodon is a genus of felids belonging to the extinct subfamily Machairodontinae. It is one of the best known saber-toothed predators and prehistoric mammals. Although commonly known as the saber-toothed tiger, it was not closely related to the tiger or other modern cats. Smilodon lived in the Americas during the Pleistocene epoch. The genus was named in 1842 based on fossils from Brazil; the generic name means "scalpel" or "two-edged knife" combined with "tooth". Three species are recognized today: S. gracilis, S. fatalis, and S. populator. The two latter species were probably descended from S. gracilis, which itself probably evolved from Megantereon. Basilosaurus is a genus of large, predatory, prehistoric archaeocete whale from the late Eocene, approximately 41.3 to 33.9 million years ago (mya). First described in 1834, it was the first archaeocete and prehistoric whale known to science. Fossils attributed to the type species B. cetoides were discovered in the United States. They were originally thought to be of a giant reptile, hence the suffix "-saurus", Ancient Greek for "lizard". The animal was later found to be an early marine mammal, prompting attempts at renaming the creature, which failed as the rules of zoological nomenclature dictate using the original name given. Fossils were later found of the second species, B. isis, in 1904 in Egypt, Western Sahara, Morocco, Jordan, Tunisia, and Pakistan. Fossils have also been unearthed in the southeastern United States and Peru.

Arsinoitheres were superficially rhinoceros-like herbivores that lived during the Late Eocene and the Early Oligocene of North Africa from 36 to 30 million years ago, in areas of tropical rainforest and at the margin of mangrove swamps. A species described in 2004, A. giganteum, lived in Ethiopia about 27 million years ago.

<i>Thylacosmilus</i> Extinct genus of mammals

Thylacosmilus is an extinct genus of saber-toothed metatherian mammals that inhabited South America from the Late Miocene to Pliocene epochs. Though Thylacosmilus looks similar to the "saber-toothed cats", it was not a felid, like the well-known North American Smilodon, but a sparassodont, a group closely related to marsupials, and only superficially resembled other saber-toothed mammals due to convergent evolution. A 2005 study found that the bite forces of Thylacosmilus and Smilodon were low, which indicates the killing-techniques of saber-toothed animals differed from those of extant species. Remains of Thylacosmilus have been found primarily in Catamarca, Entre Ríos, and La Pampa Provinces in northern Argentina.

Nimravus is an extinct genus of "false" saber-toothed cat in the family Nimravidae known from North America, Asia and Europe during the late Eocene and Oligocene epochs 35.3—26.3 mya, existing for approximately 9 million years. Fossils have been uncovered in the western U.S. from Oregon to southern California and Nebraska.

Paleontology in Nebraska refers to paleontological research occurring within or conducted by people from the U.S. state of Nebraska. Nebraska is world-famous as a source of fossils. During the early Paleozoic, Nebraska was covered by a shallow sea that was probably home to creatures like brachiopods, corals, and trilobites. During the Carboniferous, a swampy system of river deltas expanded westward across the state. During the Permian period, the state continued to be mostly dry land. <i>Galeocerdo alabamensis</i> Extinct species of shark

Galeocerdo alabamensis is an extinct relative of the modern tiger shark. Nomenclature of this shark has been debated, and recent literature identified it more closely with the Physogaleus genus of prehistoric shark, rather than Galeocerdo. The classification of Physogaleus is known as tiger-like sharks while Galeocerdo refers to tiger sharks. In 2003, P. alabamensis was classified as Galeocerdo. However, in 2019, they were proclaimed to be more morphologically similar to the genus Physogaleus. This definition was based primarily on tooth shape, as the majority of information on P. alabamensis is a result of studying tooth fossils. Distinctions between Physogaleus and Galeocerdo are difficult with extinct sharks from the Oilgocene/Miocene as there is little paleobiological information allowing for hard conclusions.

Diegoaelurus is an extinct genus of placental mammals from extinct the subfamily Machaeroidinae within extinct family Oxyaenidae. This genus contains only one species Diegoaelurus vanvalkenburghae, which was found in the Santiago Formation in California. This mammal lived during the Uintan stage of the Middle Eocene Epoch around 46.2 to 39.7 million years ago.
