The Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art is one of the most important Russian cultural events and was founded in 2003.
The First Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art (January 28 – February 28, 2005) caused great response both in Russia and abroad. The main exhibition “Dialectics of Hope” included projects by 41 artists from 22 countries and represented art that focuses on one of the most fundamental experiences of a modern human being: hope. The main project was realised at the former Lenin Museum, near the Red Square. The Biennale's special projects and parallel program numbered over 50 exhibitions of Russian actual art as well as European, American and Asian visual artists. Curators (main project): Joseph Backstein, Daniel Birnbaum, Iara Boubnova, Nicolas Bourriaud, Rosa Martinez and Hans Ulrich Obrist.
The main project of the Second Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art (March 1 – April 1, 2007) titled “FOOTNOTES on Geopolitics, Market and Amnesia” showed works of 115 artists from 20 countries. Different curators and curatorial teams realized 5 exhibitions of the main project united by one theme. The project featured the exhibitions organized at various venues including The State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow Contemporary Art Center Winzavod, Moscow Museum of Modern Art.

The commissioner of the Biennale was Joseph Backstein. The exhibition program of the Third Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art (September 24 - November 1, 2009) featured main project "Against exclusion" and more than 39 special projects and 7 special guests shows.
The main project of Third Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art entitled "Against exclusion" (curator Jean-Hubert Martin, best known for his exhibition "Magiciens de la terre" at the Centre Pompidou, Paris, 1989) was held at the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture (now known as Garage Museum of Contemporary Art) and was presenting artists from Russia, Europe, United States, Asia, South America, Africa and Oceania. French curator Jean-Hubert Martin mixed the work of well-known contemporary western artists with non-western and non-professional artists. He was assisted by Exhibition Designer and Dutch Curator Mattijs Visser and French Curator Oliver Varenne.

The Special Guest program represent personal exhibitions of the important figures of the modern art scene.

The curator of the Fourth Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art will be Peter Weibel, curator, artist, theorist of media arts and director of the Center of Art and Media Technology (ZKM) in Karlsruhe (Germany). Fourth Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art will take place in September–October 2011. Commissioner and the artistic director of the Biennale will be Joseph Backstein.
Nicolas Bourriaud is a curator and art critic, who has curated a great number of exhibitions and biennials all over the world.
Rosa Martínez is an independent curator, art critic and international art advisor based in Barcelona, Spain.
Josephine Meckseper is a German born artist based in New York City. Her large-scale installations and films have been exhibited in various international biennials and museum shows worldwide. She approaches her art as a conceptual experiment.
Vladimir Dubossarsky (1964) is a Russian painter working in pop art genre.
Marat Aleksandrovich Gelman is a Russian collector, gallerist, and an op-ed columnist. The former Director of PERMM contemporary art museum in Perm. The Deputy Director of Channel One (Russia) from June 2002 to February 2004. A political consultant, a co-founder of the Foundation for Effective Politics, and a member of Russia’s Public Chamber.
Georgy (Gosha) Ostretsov is a Russian artist and performer. Ostretsov represented Russia during the 53rd Venice Biennale in 2009.
Pavel Pepperstein is a Russian artist and writer.
Anatoly Osmolovsky, is a Russian visual artist, performer, theorist, editor and teacher. He resides in Moscow where he sculpts wood. Osmolovsky grounds his art in theory and supports his work with self-published writings in Radek (1993) and Base (2010) magazines and by teaching art history.
Sergei Enwerowitsch Tchoban is a Russian and German Architect working in various cities in Europe and the Russian Federation. He is a member of the Association of German Architects (BDA), the Union of Architects of Russia and the Union of Artists of Russia, academician of the Moscow branch of the International Academy of Architecture and honorary academician of the Russian Academy of Arts, the recipient of architectural awards and a participant in various architectural exhibitions.
Anastasia Ryabova is a contemporary artist who won the 2011 Kandinsky Prize in media projects for her work, Artist's Private Collections, a virtual "museum of contemporary art based on artists' private collections". She is known for works that play "linguistic games." She was also the Soratnik awards laureate for 2011. Her art has been exhibited in Russia, Austria, Italy, and Germany.
Georgy Kiesewalter is a Russian conceptual artist, photographer and essayist. As an artist, he uses a wide range of media to communicate his concepts to the public – from painting to graphic art, from installations to conceptual photography and digital art.
Dmitry Kawarga born in Moscow, Russia is a Russian artist. Kawarga began working in his own style of "biomorphism" striving to create a synthesis of science, art and technology. His art is featured in numerous museums and is part of the permanent collection of Erarta, Russia's largest private museum of contemporary art located in Saint Petersburg.
Irina Isayevna Nakhova is a Russian artist. Her father, Isai Nakhov, is a philologist. At 14 years old her mother took her to Victor Pivovarov's Atelier. Pivovarov played an important role in her life and later became her mentor. In 2015, Nakhova became the first female artist to represent Russia in its pavilion at the Venice Biennial. She is represented by Nailya Alexander Gallery in New York City. Nakhova currently lives and works in Moscow and New Jersey. She works with different mediums like fine art, photography, sounds, sensors and inflatable materials. She is a Laureate of the Kandinsky 2013 Award.
The Moscow International Biennale for Young Art (MIBYA) is a major contemporary visual art exhibition that focuses on the work of artists and curators under the age of 35. It aims to bring together new artistic initiatives from Russia and the world by supporting the creative development of young artists for interested audiences. MIBYA was first held in 2008 in response to rising interest from artists, curators and critics following the festival of young art, "Qui Vive?" sponsored by the National Center for Contemporary Arts (NCCA) and held annually from 2002 to 2006, in collaboration with free workshops at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art (MMOMA). "The project has acquired new status thanks to growing interest from young artists, curators, and critics. Through the combined efforts of the NCCA and MMOMA, the biennial for young art was developed."
Taus Makhacheva is a Russian artist based in Moscow. She is the granddaughter of Rasul Gamzatov – Avar poet, author, journalist and political activist. Taus Makhacheva included in the list of the Best contemporary Russian artists (ARTEEX), and also in the Russian Investment Art Rating 49ART.
Ilya Alexandrovich Dolgov, is a Russian artist.
Anna Parkina is a Russian artist who lives and works in Moscow. She uses collage as her key artistic method but also works in a variety of media, including performance, sculpture and video.
Tatyana Sherstyuk is a Russian artist and curator based in Moscow.
The 1 Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art was held in Moscow from January 28 to February 28, 2005. This exhibition laid the concept, structure and traditions of the Moscow Biennale, in accordance with which the subsequent shows were held: the division of the Biennale program into three parts - the thematic main project, special projects and a parallel program, - invitation of special guests, appointment of Commissioner and a curatorial group with a curator-coordinator, distribution of exhibition sites around the city, publication of a catalog, etc.
Aslan Goisum is a contemporary artist. He works with various media – mainly, installations, video art and paper-based techniques.
