Liverpool Biennial is the largest international contemporary art festival in the United Kingdom. [1]
Since its launch in 1998, Liverpool Biennial has commissioned over 380 new artworks and presented work by over 530 artists from around the world. During the last 10 years, Liverpool Biennial has had an economic impact of £119.6 million. Liverpool Biennial 2014 nearly 877,000 visits. [2]
Liverpool Biennial was established by James Moores (with Jane Rankin Read, Lewis Biggs and Bryan Biggs) in 1998 and has presented festivals in 1999, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008 (as part of Liverpool's year as European Capital of Culture), 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016[ citation needed ] and 2018. [3] As of 2012, Sally Tallant is the Director of Liverpool Biennial.[ citation needed ]
The Biennial exhibition is supported by FACT (the Foundation for Art and Creative Technology), [4] Tate Liverpool, National Museums Liverpool, Bluecoat, and Open Eye Gallery. The annual Bloomberg New Contemporaries Exhibition showcases new work by graduates from Fine Art schools in the UK.
Since 2006, the Liverpool Biennial has included 'collateral' events organised and supported by embassies, international agencies, or galleries, and promoted by Liverpool Biennial as a part of the programme. In 2010, for the first time, the biennial offered a platform for exhibitions organised overseas and promoted under the title City States. Visitors to the Biennial spent £27 million total in 2010.[ citation needed ]
Liverpool Biennial has a year-round programme of commissioning art for the public realm, such as Richard Wilson's Turning the Place Over and Antony Gormley's Another Place at Crosby Beach. The organizers also promote an ongoing educational programme.[ citation needed ]
The Biennial coincides with the John Moores Painting Prize, an open submission award to the best contemporary painting in the UK. The winning work and shortlisted pieces are exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery as part of the Liverpool Biennial programme.
In 2004, the festival caused controversy by exhibiting a work by Yoko Ono entitled My mummy was beautiful. This was a series of full colour photographs of a woman's breast and crotch, which were exhibited throughout the city centre. Peter Johansson's Swedish red was a one-room house at the Pier Head painted bright red and playing ABBA's record "Dancing Queen". The Walker Art Gallery mounted The Stuckists Punk Victorian , the first major show of the Stuckist artists, who had not previously been given official recognition. [5]

The theme and title of the Biennial's showpiece International 08 exhibition was "Made Up". [8]
Throughout 2008 as part of Liverpool's year as European Capital of Culture, new commissions for the public realm included Winter Lights (a series of neon lights by international artists, such as Frank Scurti and Michael Pinsky, in collaboration with local communities), Visible Virals (interventionist artworks in public spaces and buildings in the city), and a series of Pavilions (creating spaces for cultural activity in local communities).
Again there was also the John Moores Painting Prize (No. 25), the New Contemporaries and The Independents.

The 6th biennial in Liverpool was launched with a one night exhibition by Filip Gilissen on 14 May 2010 and ran from 18 September 2010 to 28 November 2010. It contained six programmes of contemporary art including: Bloomberg New Contemporaries, City States, John Moores Painting Prize 2010, S.Q.U.A.T. Liverpool 2010, and The Cooperative.
Displays included works by Alfredo Jaar, Do-Ho Suh and the first UK presentation of any work by Tehching Hsieh. [9]
The visitor centre was located in the former Rapid Hardware shop on Renshaw Street.

For its 7th edition, Liverpool Biennial explored the theme of hospitality, inviting artists and thinkers to bring forth new understandings for our increasingly globalised and complex times. The biennial exhibition, The Unexpected Guest, comprised 62 international artists, and the Cunard Building was used as a venue for the first time. The programme included: Sky Arts Ignition Series, in partnership with Tate Liverpool , a public commission by US artist, Doug Aitken, installed on Albert Dock in a temporary structure designed by David Adjaye; American composer Rhys Chatham, known for his large-scale performance works presented a concert as part of the opening weekend; one of Argentina's most established and internationally renowned artists, Jorge Macchi, presented Refraction in the LJMU Copperas Hill Building; Israeli artist, Oded Hirsch presented Lift a work which appeared to burst through the floor of Liverpool ONE - Liverpool's retail destination.

The 8th biennial, A Needle Walks into a Haystack, opened on 5 July 2014 and ran until 26 October 2014. [10]

Liverpool Biennial 2014 was curated by Mai Abu ElDahab and Anthony Huberman.
16 artists' works were shown in The Old Blind School on Hardman St. [11] There were two external works by Carlos Cruz-Diez, [12] including a Dazzle Ship.
The ninth edition of Liverpool Biennial ran from 9 July 2016 to 16 October 2016. [13]
44 international artists were commissioned to create new works for locations across the city. In 2016, Liverpool Biennial also presented an exhibition of works by ten Associate Artists, based in the North of England: Simeon Barclay, Jacqueline Bebb, Lindsey Bull, Robert Carter & Lauren Velvick, Nina Chua, Matthew Crawley, Frances Disley, Daniel Fogarty, Harry Meadley, and Stephen Sheehan. The Liverpool Biennial 2016 exhibition was conceived as a series of 'episodes' drawing inspiration from Liverpool's past, present and future, named as Ancient Greece, Chinatown, The Children’s Episode, Monuments from the Future, Flashback, and Software. [15]
Among the locations for Liverpool Biennial 2016 were the Cains Brewery on Stanhope Street, the former ABC Cinema on Lime Street, the Oratory, Toxteth Reservoir, streets, squares, restaurants, a supermarket, and all the key visual art venues in the city including Tate Liverpool, FACT, Open Eye Gallery and Bluecoat. [16] Also presented during the 2016 Biennial are the John Moores Painting Prize 2016 at Walker Art Gallery, Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2016 at Bluecoat, and the Biennial Fringe.

The 2018 Biennial ran from 14 July to 28 October 2018 and was called Beautiful world, where are you?. [3]

The 11th biennial curated by Manuela Moscoso and titled The Stomach and the Port ran from 20 March to 6 June 2021 in Liverpool and online. [20] Artists include Linder, Judy Chicago, Ithell Colquhoun, Ines Doujak, Nicholas Hlobo, Jutta Koether, Ebony G. Patterson, Anu Põder, and Martine Syms. [20]
The 12th edition of Liverpool Biennial, uMoya: The sacred Return of Lost Things, ran from 10 June to 17 September 2023. The Biennial addressed the history and temperament of the city of Liverpool and was a call for ancestral and indigenous forms of knowledge, wisdom and healing. Liverpool Biennial 2023 was curated by Khanyisile Mbongwa.
Liverpool Biennial 2025, titled ‘BEDROCK’, draws on Liverpool’s geography and the beliefs which underpin the city’s social foundations, acting as a metaphor for the people places and values that ground all of us. It is inspired by the sandstone which spans the city region and is found in its distinctive architecture.
The 13th edition is curated by Marie-Anne McQuay and will take place 7 June - 14 September 2025.
Stuckism is an international art movement founded in 1999 by Billy Childish and Charles Thomson to promote figurative painting as opposed to conceptual art. By May 2017, the initial group of 13 British artists had expanded to 236 groups in 52 countries.
The Turner Prize, named after the English painter J. M. W. Turner, is an annual prize presented to a British visual artist. Between 1991 and 2016, only artists under the age of 50 were eligible. The prize is awarded at Tate Britain every other year, with various venues outside of London being used in alternate years. Since its beginnings in 1984 it has become the UK's most publicised art award. The award represents all media.
The Walker Art Gallery is an art gallery in Liverpool, which houses one of the largest art collections in England outside London. It is part of the National Museums Liverpool group.
Charles Thomson is an English artist, poet and photographer. In the early 1980s he was a member of The Medway Poets. In 1999 he named and co-founded the Stuckists art movement with Billy Childish. He has curated Stuckist shows, organised demonstrations against the Turner Prize, run an art gallery, stood for parliament and reported Charles Saatchi to the OFT. He is frequently quoted in the media as an opponent of conceptual art. He was briefly married to artist Stella Vine.
Jesse Beau Richards is a painter, filmmaker and photographer from New Haven, Connecticut and was affiliated with the international movement Stuckism. He has been described as "one of the most provocative names in American underground culture," and "the father of remodernist cinema."
The Stuckists Punk Victorian was the first national gallery exhibition of Stuckist art. It was held at the Walker Art Gallery and Lady Lever Art Gallery in Liverpool from 18 September 2004 to 20 February 2005 and was part of the 2004 Liverpool Biennial.
John Bourne is a British artist and painter, living and working in Wales, and a member of the Stuckists art movement. He founded the Wrexham Stuckists group in 2001 and has been exhibited in the group's shows since then, including The Stuckists Punk Victorian. He has also taken part in Stuckist demonstrations against the Turner Prize. The subject matter for his paintings, which are done in a simplified style, comes from his memories.
Godfrey Blow is a British-born contemporary artist based in Kalamunda, Western Australia. A painter whose work is inspired by myths and mythical landscapes, he founded the Perth Stuckists in 2003.
Stuckism is an art movement that began in London, England, in 1999. In 2000, Melbourne artist Regan Tamanui started the first international branch of the movement. As of 2010, there are seven Australian Stuckist groups, who have held shows—sometimes concurrently with UK activities—received coverage in the Australian press and on TV, and also been represented in UK shows. The Stuckists take a strong pro-painting and anti-conceptual art stance, and were co-founded by Charles Thomson and Billy Childish.
The Stuckism art movement was started in London in 1999 to promote figurative painting and oppose conceptual art. This was mentioned in the United States media, but the first Stuckist presence in US was not until the following year, when former installation artist, Susan Constanse, founded a Pittsburgh chapter.
Naive John is a British artist and figurative painter. His work shows attention to detail with subjects that combine elements from popular culture alongside the mythic and mundane. He has also in the past been involved in the Stuckism art movement.
Odysseus Yakoumakis is a Stuckist artist, painter and illustrator, based in Athens, Greece. He is the founder of the first Greek Stuckist group, The Romantic Anonymous Fellowship, and organiser of the first international Stuckist group show in Greece, Under the Cover of Romantic Anonymity. He was a scheduled speaker at the first Stuckist international symposium, The Triumph of Stuckism, in England. He practises martial arts and he is currently studying traditional engraving.
Gavin Jantjes is a South African painter, curator, writer and lecturer.
The Stuckism International Gallery was the gallery of the Stuckist art movement. It was open from 2002 to 2005 in Shoreditch, and was run by Charles Thomson, the co-founder of Stuckism. It was launched by a procession carrying a coffin marked "The death of conceptual art" to the neighbouring White Cube gallery.
Samson Kambalu is a Malawi-born artist, academic and author who trained as a fine artist and ethnomusicologist at the University of Malawi's Chancellor College. He is a Fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford.
Liverpool and the Black Atlantic was a season of citywide series of exhibitions and events initiated by Tate Liverpool exploring connections between cultures and continents.
Rokni Haerizadeh is an Iranian artist living and working in Dubai. He participated in the Carnegie International in 2013. He is part of a collective Ramin, Rokni, Hesam
Simryn Gill is a Singapore-born artist who specializes in sculpture, photography, drawing, printmaking, writing, and publishing. Throughout her career, Gill has presented her art at several significant events, including Germany's Documenta art show and the Venice Biennale, and is one of Australia's most famous contemporary artists. Gill lives between Sydney, Australia, and Port Dickson, Malaysia.
Look Photo Biennial is a biannual photography festival based in Liverpool, UK. It is a four-week programme that takes place in various venues in Liverpool and across the North West in April and May. It dates back to 2007 but began in its current format in 2011. From 2018 it is being led by Open Eye Gallery, where the festival is centred.
