Movement 21 (Papiamentu : Movementu 21, M21) is a Dutch local political party in the special municipality of Bonaire.

History

Movement 21 was founded on 1 October 2021 by independent island councillor Daisy Coffie. [1] Coffie had been a member of the Bonaire People's Movement (MPB) group in the island council of Bonaire since the 2015 election, but left the party in September 2020 following an internal dispute. [2]

Movement 21 describes itself as "social liberal" and "a centrist, progressive movement". [3] The party participated in the 2023 island council election and electoral college election, winning one seat in both the island council and the electoral college for the Senate. [4] [5]

Saba is a Caribbean island and the smallest special municipality of the Netherlands. In the elections preceding the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles the party gained two seats as well and joined the coalition government.

The Bonaire Democratic Party, also known as Demokrat, is a political party in Bonaire and formerly the Netherlands Antilles.

Gerrit Fransisco Schotte is a Curaçaoan politician, and the current leader of the Movementu Futuro Kòrsou (MFK). In the Curaçao general election of 27 August 2010, the MFK became the second-largest party with 5 seats in the Island Council. MFK formed an island government together with Pueblo Soberano and Partido MAN on 4 September. This coalition became the first Cabinet of Curaçao when the Netherlands Antilles was dismantled on 10 October 2010. Schotte at that point became the first Prime Minister of Curaçao.

General elections were held in Curaçao on 19 October 2012. Early elections for the Curaçao island council were necessary as the Cabinet-Schotte lost its majority in the Estates of Curaçao. The elections were the first of the Curaçao after obtaining the status of country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands upon the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles in 2010. The election saw six parties obtain one or more of the 21 seats, with Sovereign People and Movement for the Future of Curaçao both winning five.

The electoral colleges for the Senate are the electoral colleges of the Caribbean Netherlands and Dutch expatriates. Their members together with the members of the provincial councils in the European Netherlands choose the Senators of the Dutch Senate.

Island council elections were held in the Caribbean Netherlands on 20 March 2019 to elect the members of the island councils of Bonaire and Saba. The elections were held on the same day as the electoral college elections in the Caribbean Netherlands, and the provincial and water board elections in the European Netherlands. Esmeralda Johnson is a politician from Saba, and former member of the Saba Island Council for the Windward Islands People's Movement. She held this post since 28 March 2019 when, at age 21, she became the youngest person to serve in that capacity.

An election to the Dutch Senate was held on 30 May 2023. The 75 members of the Senate were elected by members of the provincial councils and electoral colleges elected two months earlier in provincial and electoral college elections.
