Myeonbok is a kind of ceremonial clothing worn by the kings of Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910) in Korea. [1] [2] Myeonbok was adopted from Chinese Mianfu, and is worn by kings at special events such as the coronation, morning audience, Lunar New Year's audience, ancestral rites at Jongmyo and the soil and grain rite at Sajikdan. [1] Myeonbok symbolizes the dignity of king when conducting important ceremonies. [3]

Types of myeonbok

Myeonbok is divided into gujangbok and sibijangbok. [1] Gujangbok (nine-emblem myeonbok) [4] is worn by king and sibijangbok (twelve-emblem myeonbok) is worn by emperor. [5] The myeonbok of Korean Kings could only use nine symbols instead of the Twelve Ornaments as only the Emperor (typically Chinese Emperors) could wear the Twelve Ornaments. [4] The Korean kings have used the nine symbols since the year 1065 AD after the Liao emperor had bestowed a nine-symbol robe (Chinese :九章衣; pinyin :jiǔzhāngyī; gujangbok) to the Korean king in 1043 AD. The myeonbok is worn with seok (shoes worn for rituals); the seok also originated from China before developing further into a unique Korean style. [2]

History

In early Joseon, King Taejong attempted to develop positive relationship with China's Ming dynasty; this positive political orientation towards Ming dynasty China lead to the formal recognition of Joseon and the inauguration of King Taejong as the King of Joseon, along with the bestowal of the Mianfu. [7]

Gojong of Korea appropriated the Twelve Ornaments on his enthronement costume (i.e. myeonbok, 면복/冕服) when he became the Emperor of Korea in 1897 which followed the dress system of ancient China. [8] [5]

Out of the occasions where myeonbok would have been worn, the ancestral rites at Jongmyo and the soil and grain rite at Sajikdan continue into the 21st century, where the Hereditary Prince Imperial, wearing the 12-ornamented myeonbok, presides in place of the Emperor.

The hanbok is a traditional clothing of the Korean people. The term hanbok is primarily used by South Koreans; North Koreans refer to the clothes as chosŏn-ot (조선옷). The clothes are also worn in the Korean diaspora, especially by Koreans in China.

Jongmyo jerye (Korean: 종묘제례) or jongmyo daeje (종묘대제) is a traditional rite held for worshipping the deceased Joseon monarchs in Jongmyo Shrine, Seoul, South Korea. It is held every year on the first Sunday of May. The jongmyo rite is usually accompanied with the court music playing (Jerye-ak) and dance called Ilmu or line dance. Jongmyo jerye and jeryeak were designated as the first of South Korea's Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2001.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Gwanbok</span>

Gwanbok is a Korean term which was borrowed from the Chinese terms guanfu and guanfu. The term gwanbok is a collective term which refers to historical official attire, which was bestowed by the government court, including Chinese courts of various dynasties. The guanfu (冠服) system was a court attire system in China which also formed part of the Hanfu system. This system was them spread to neighbouring countries and was adopted in Korea since ancient times in different periods through the ritual practice of bestowal of clothing. Acknowledgement through bestowed robes and crowns (冠服) from the Emperor of China, who held hegemony over East Asia, would give support to Korean Kings and successors, as being the authentic rulers of their country as well as confirmed the political status of the Korean kingdom in the rest of the Sinosphere. The gwanbok system in Korea was different for each kingdom and changed throughout different periods. For example, initially given by the Chinese court in ritual practice, successive gwanbok were more often than not locally manufactured in Korea with different colours and adopted into hanbok. The gwanbok, which was used as the uniform of court officials, formed part of the gwanbok system and was used like the suit is nowadays.

<i>Dopo</i> (clothing)

Dopo is a variety of po, or overcoat in hanbok, which was first worn in the middle of the Joseon since the 16th century. The dopo was mostly worn by male Confucian scholars called seonbi during the Joseon period. It was also worn by Kings and princes and government officers. The dopo held a strong Confucianism value. It was worn as an everyday outer garment by Neo-Confucian scholars, who wore it as an official form of clothing or as a ritual clothing. It was also an ordinary robe worn by the court officials. Since the 1894 reform, all varieties of po with wide sleeves, including the dopo, were prohibited to be worn by King Gojong and instead people had to wear the durumagi.

<i>Chima</i> (clothing) Type of skirt

Chima is a generic term for the skirt worn together with jeogori, or a short jacket in hanbok, Korean traditional clothing. It is also referred to as sang or gun in hanja in the Korean language.

Diyi, also called known as huiyi and miaofu, is the historical Chinese attire worn by the empresses of the Song dynasty and by the empresses and crown princesses in the Ming Dynasty. The diyi also had different names based on its colour, such as yudi, quedi, and weidi. It is a formal wear meant only for ceremonial purposes. It is a form of shenyi, and is embroidered with long-tail pheasants and circular flowers. <i>Jang-ot</i> Historical Korean headdress

A jang-ot, also known as janot, jang-eui, or jang-ui, is a type of po worn by women of the Joseon Dynasty period as a headdress or veil to cover their faces by the mid-18th century. They were mostly worn by commoners but not exclusively. Jang-ot was originally a form of men's po called jang-ui, which was worn in 15th century. The jang-ui started to be worn by women as an overcoat in early Joseon, even becoming a popular fashion item for women of high status. It was previously one of the most representative women's overcoats; it was worn as a women's overcoat when they would leave their house until the 17th century.

Dragon robes, also known as gunlongpao or longpao for short, is a form of everyday clothing which had a Chinese dragon, called long (龍), as the main decoration; it was worn by the emperors of China. Dragon robes were also adopted by the rulers of neighbouring countries, such as Korea, Vietnam, and the Ryukyu Kingdom.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Mianfu</span>

Mianfu is a kind of Chinese clothing in hanfu; it was worn by emperors, kings, and princes, and in some instances by the nobles in historical China from the Shang to the Ming dynasty. The mianfu is the highest level of formal dress worn by Chinese monarchs and the ruling families in special ceremonial events such as coronation, morning audience, ancestral rites, worship, new year's audience and other ceremonial activities. There were various forms of mianfu, and the mianfu also had its own system of attire called the mianfu system which was developed back in the Western Zhou dynasty. The mianfu was used by every dynasty from Zhou dynasty onward until the collapse of the Ming dynasty. The Twelve Ornaments were used on the traditional imperial robes in China, including on the mianfu. These Twelve Ornaments were later adopted in clothing of other ethnic groups; for examples, the Khitan and the Jurchen rulers adopted the Twelve ornaments in 946 AD and in 1140 AD respectively. The Korean kings have also adopted clothing embellished with nine out of the Twelve ornaments since 1065 AD after the Liao emperor had bestowed a nine-symbol robe to the Korean king, King Munjong, in 1043 AD where it became known as gujangbok.

The bixi was later introduced in Korea during Goryeo and Joseon by the Ming dynasty, along with many garments for royalties.

<i>Dapho</i> Korean short sleeve or no sleeve garment

Dapho (Korean: 답호), also known as dapbok or dapo, is either a sleeveless or short sleeved garment, The dapo originated in the Yuan dynasty and was introduced in Korea during the late Goryeo. With time the structure of the dapho changed in shape structure although it maintained the same name. Some form of dapho was introduced from China's Ming dynasty in the form of dahu during the Joseon period, when the clothing was bestowed to various Joseon kings.

A Zongmiao (宗廟) or Taimiao (太廟) is an ancient Chinese ancestral temple dedicated to the ancestors of nobles and monarchs and their spirit tablets. Zong (宗) means ancestral and Miao (廟) means temple. The earliest known Zongmiao was discovered at Yinxu Palace and Temple Site in Anyang, Henan Province, China, and is yet to be excavated. At that time, commoners did not have the right to set up ancestral shrines, "The Xunzi-Liturgy" reads: "Therefore, those who have the world serve seven generations, those who have a country serve five generations, those who have five times the land serve three generations, those who have three times the land serve two generations, those who hold their hands and eat are not allowed to set up a temple, so the thick accumulation of the flow of water is wide, and the thin accumulation of water is narrow. "
