Namdhari Football Club is an Indian professional football club based in Bhaini Sahib, Punjab. Part of the multi-sports Namdhari Sports Academy, it competes in the Punjab State Super League. [2] [3] Namdhari FC bid and joined the I-League, [4] current second division of the Indian football league system. [5]

History

The field hockey team, Namdhari XI was first formed in 1975. [6] In 2004, the Namdhari Sports Academy was built in Sri Bhaini Sahib, near Ludhiana. With growing interest in football, the Namdharis established its first football academy in 2018. [7] [8]

In their I-League debut season, the club was managed by Spanish tactician Francesc Bonet. [9] He is currently in charge of the team as head coach, the Argentine Fernando David Capobianco. [10]

The Namdharis or Namdhari Sikhs, also known as Kuka, are a Sikh sect that differs from mainstream Sikhs chiefly in that they believe that the lineage of Sikh Gurus did not end with Satguru Gobind Singh (1666–1708) in 1708, as they recognize Satguru Balak Singh (1797–1862) as the 11th Guru of the Sikh religion, thus continuing the succession of Sikh Gurus through the centuries from Satguru Nanak Dev to the present day. Their 12th Guru is Satguru Ram Singh [1816–1885(disputed)], who moved the sect's centre to Sri Bhaini Sahib (Ludhiana) and is regarded as the first Indian to use non-cooperation and non-violence boycott in order to combat the British Empire in India.

The 2023–24 season was the 36th season of Churchill Brothers in existence and fifteenth in the I-League. A new coach for the team, Edgardo Malvestiti, was appointed on 29 July 2023. The club has mutually parted ways with the head coach from Argentina after finding themselves in the bottom half of the I-League midway into the season. Francesc Bonet replaced him in January 2024.

The 2024–25 Punjab State Super League is the 38th edition of the Punjab State Super League, the fifth-tier league in the Indian football system, and Punjab's top-tier football league. Namdhari FC are the current defending champions. This edition will see 12 teams compete for the title, down from the 15 teams which competed last season.

Satguru Jagjit Singh was the spiritual head of the Namdhari Sikhs from 1959 to 2012. Namdhari Sikhi emphasises purity, non-violence and the revival of traditional Sikh practices. Satguru Jagjit Singh led the Namdhari community for over six decades, promoting spiritual discipline, traditional music and environmental conservation.
