The name "Netteswell" means 'Nethel's spring/stream'. [6] Ancient parish [7] of Netteswell was in Harlow hundred. [2] In 1894 Netteswell became part of Epping Rural District, on 1 April 1934 part of the parish was transferred to Gilston, on 1 April 1946 the parish of Little Parndon was abolished and merged with Netteswell, at the same time part of Netteswell was transferred to North Weald Bassett, [8] on 1 April 1955 the parish was abolished and merged with Harlow [9] and became part of Harlow Urban District. At the 1951 census (the last before the abolition of the parish), Netteswell had a population of 855. [10] In 1974 Little Parndon became part of Harlow non-metropolitan district in the non-metropolitan county of Essex. No successor parish was created for the former urban district and so it became unparished.
