New California is a census-designated place in central Jerome Township, Union County, Ohio, United States. [3] It is located at the intersection of U.S. Route 42 and Industrial Parkway, just south of 42's intersection with U.S. Route 33. [4] The population was 2,225 at the 2020 census.

History

New California was platted in 1853. [5] According to tradition, news of a man passing through the settlement to California caused the name to be selected. [6] The New California Post office was established on January 7, 1850, but was discontinued on May 14, 1904. The mail service is now sent through the Plain City branch.

On September 19, 2009, a new Ohio historical marker was dedicated in New California. The marker symbolizes the fact that 367 men from Jerome Township joined the Union cause, giving it one of the highest per capita rates for service in the nation during the American Civil War, and also the fact that seventeen of those veterans are buried in the community's small cemetery. [7]

Education

Most of New California CDP is in Jonathan Alder Local School District while some parts are in Dublin City School District and in Fairbanks Local School District. [9]

The comprehensive high school of the first district is Jonathan Alder High School.

The zoned schools for the Dublin City School District portion are: Glacier Ridge Elementary School, [10] Eversole Run Middle School, [11] and Dublin Jerome High School. [12]

Jonathan Alder was an American pioneer, and the first white settler in Madison County, Ohio. As a young child living in Virginia, Alder was kidnapped by Shawnee Indians, and later adopted by a Mingo chief in the Ohio Country. He lived with the Native Americans for many years before returning to the white community.

The New Albany-Plain Local School District is located in and around New Albany, Ohio in central Ohio, about 20 miles (32 km) northeast of downtown Columbus, Ohio. The school district covers an area of 26 square miles (67 km2), all located in the northeast corner of Franklin County, Ohio. The district features eight buildings serving grades K-12 all on one centrally-located campus. The schools are connected by tree-lined walkways, and are surrounded by an 80-acre (320,000 m2) nature preserve.

Northwest Columbus is a region in Franklin County, Ohio. It has about 45,000 residents, according to the 2010 U.S. census.
