New Glow is the fifth studio album by American duo Matt and Kim, consisting of singer and keyboardist Matt Johnson and drummer Kim Schifino. Following the self-recorded Lightning (2012), New Glow features production and engineering contributions from Jesse Shatkin, Andrew Dawson, and Lars Stalfors, who produced the duo's self-titled debut. It is a dance-pop record that contains more cues from mainstream styles than previous releases, and is lyrically about Johnson and Schifino's relationship. Released by Harvest Records on April 7, 2015, it reached the top 40 of the American Billboard 200 chart and the top five on the Top Rock Albums and Independent Albums charts. Critical reviews were mixed. Although certain journalists enjoyed New Glow as a fun album, it was generally considered their weakest release due to its move towards a mainstream polished sound and drying-out of a simple formula.
New Glow was written and recorded in a year-and-a-half process, which started in December 2013 with Matt & Kim not intending to create another album. [1] Johnson explained in an interview with The Aquarian Weekly , "We just thought, 'Hey, let’s make one cool song.' Then it turned into, 'Let’s make another song!' And then eventually it turned into an album I guess." [2] The tracks were planned to be released separately, but Johnson became too impatient and wanted the public to hear them at the same time. [2] Of the 60 songs the duo worked on, only the last ten encompass New Glow. [1] Although their previous album Lightning (2012) was self-produced, Matt & Kim had assistance from three professionals for New Glow: Lars Stalfors, who previously produced the duo's self-titled debut LP, Jesse Shatkin, and Andrew Dawson. With New Glow, Matt & Kim intended to capture their love of various popular musical styles that they felt they successfully did in their live shows but never in recording format. [3] New Glow is a dance pop record that takes cues from punk, hip hop, and electronic dance music; although the high-pitched shouty singing and energetic synthesizer lines typical of Matt & Kim are prevalent, it embraces much more mainstream styles than Matt and Kim's previous punk-influenced works. [a] The A.V. Club categorized it as a mixture of the slick club sound of Sidewalks with the indie dance stylings of the group's other work. [8] "Get It" is an amalgamation of electronic rock with trap and trip-hop, where Johnson sings about partying until the morning starts. [1] [8]
Lyrically, New Glow deals with Johnson and Schifino's relationship and is the first Matt & Kim record to detail it heavily. [1] Johnson described "Hey Now" as a "celebration" of Schifino's inspiration on him, and the features the line "If I died I’d die right by your side". [9] "I See Ya" is about the difficulty of keeping friendships and family relationships together while having a busy touring schedule. [1]
On January 13, 2015, New Glow and a supporting tour was announced, and the album's cover art was revealed; "Get It" also premiered that day. [10] "Get It" and "Make a Mess" were performed live on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on April 20, 2015. [11] [12] A lyric video for "Hoodie On", released on February 24, 2015, depicts the Johnson and Schifino wearing hoodies and skateboarding throughout Los Angeles, including a restaurant from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (2005–present) named Paddy's Pub. [13] The video for "Can You Blame Me?" premiered on December 15, 2015. It was created with the help of the group's fans; Johnson and Schifino filmed headshots of themselves lip-syncing to the song, and fans recorded themselves performing various activities while holding an iPad playing the headshot footage near their faces. [14] Harvest Records released New Glow on April 7, 2015, and its nationwide tour ran from April 15 to May 22, 2015. [10]

Johnson reported that New Glow gained Matt & Kim "our largest audience yet and it's definitely had the most radio plays of all our albums in the States". [9] It reached number 33 on the American Billboard 200 chart, number three on the Independent Albums chart, and number five on the Top Rock Albums chart. [22] [23] [24] Additionally, "Get It" reached number 25 on the Alternative Airplay chart and 46 on the Hot Rock Songs chart. [25] [26]
However, the album received mixed reviews from critics upon release, garnering an aggregate 52/100 from Metacritic based on nine reviews. [16] Jon Dolan, writing for Rolling Stone , enjoyed it as the duo's catchiest record yet, but also stated that "their all-smiles assault can be adorable, at least in moderate doses", but gets tiring after repeat listens. [20] Corey Henderson of Exclaim! and Hays Davis of Under the Radar also called it a fun record, although Henderson argued it suffered from a monotonous sound. [17] [21]
Several reviewers found New Glow weaker than previous Matt & Kim albums. One reason was the polished mainstream sound that departed from the energy and spirit of their past releases, with reviewers considered signature to Matt & Kim's quality. [4] [7] [17] Others considered it their worst record for the re-use of their simplistic compositional and lyrical style, to the point where it lost its luster and made the material sound amateur. [5] [8] [18] [19] Evan Rytlewski's review for Pitchfork concluded with an appeal to both opinions: "New Glow may be Matt & Kim’s most polished album, but their songwriting has never been more amateurish." [19] Chris Mincher of The A.V. Club suggested that "the duo's well of shallow melodies has finally dried up" and summarized that "on New Glow, they've either finally dumbed things down too much, or simply reached the end of where this rudimentary songwriting can take them". [8] As Katherine Flynn of Consequence of Sound advised, "Matt and Kim should maybe question the wisdom of eschewing the richness of their own wealth of experience in favor of whatever the kids are listening to these days." [5]
Although, the sound and style were given positive comments. Davis highlighted the amount of detail, "Not Alone" in particular showcasing the "full range of Johnson’s palette, with sections of keys, string accents, and bass fuzz, and drummer Kim Schifino tearing along beside him". [21] Mincher felt New Glow successfully combined the popular styles and Matt & Kim's indie style. [8]

Kim Carnes is an American singer and songwriter born and raised in Los Angeles. A veteran writer of many of her own hits, as well as those for numerous other artists, she began her career in 1966 as a member of folk group The New Christy Minstrels, before embarking on a solo career as a songwriter and performer in the early 1970s, playing in local clubs. She also worked for several years as a session background singer with the famed Waters Sisters, Maxine Waters Willard and Julia Waters Tillman, who were later featured in the acclaimed 2013 documentary, 20 Feet from Stardom). In 1971, after she signed her first publishing deal with Jimmy Bowen, Carnes released her debut album Rest on Me. Released in 1975, Carnes' self-titled second album primarily contained self-penned songs, including her first charting single "You're a Part of Me," which reached No. 35 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. In the following year, Carnes released Sailin', produced by the legendary Jerry Wexler, which featured "Love Comes from Unexpected Places." The song won the American Song Festival and the award for Best Composition at the Tokyo Song Festival in 1976.
Amel Eliza Larrieux is an American singer-songwriter, musician and keyboardist. Larrieux rose to fame in the mid-1990s as a founding member of the duo Groove Theory along with Bryce Wilson. After leaving the group in 1999, she released her debut solo album, Infinite Possibilities, the following year on Epic Records.
"Jump" is a song by American singer Madonna from her tenth studio album Confessions on a Dance Floor (2005). Written by and produced by Madonna and Stuart Price with additional writing by Joe Henry, the song was supposed to be released as the third single of the album. However, since "Get Together" was decided as the third single based on its digital sales, "Jump" was sent to hot adult contemporary radios in the United States as the fourth and final single from the album on September 11, 2006, by Warner Bros. Records. The song incorporates pop, synth-pop, techno and disco music with tributes to Pet Shop Boys. Madonna sings in her lower register in the song. Its lyrics talk about self-empowerment and sufficiency while looking for the prospects of a new relationship.
Matt and Kim are an American indie electronic duo from Brooklyn, New York City. The group formed in 2004 and consist of Matt Johnson (vocals/keyboards) and Kim Schifino (drums). The duo is known for its upbeat dance music and energetic live shows which often incorporate samples from other artists. Although they started their career playing shows in lofts and other close-quarters venues, they have since performed at numerous festivals, including Bonnaroo, Coachella, and Firefly Music Festival.

"Daylight" is a song by American indie pop duo Matt and Kim. It was the first single from their second studio album Grand. The duo performed this song on August 26, 2009 on the Jimmy Kimmel Live! show. The song appears in the video game NBA Live 10 and is the only non-hip hop song on the soundtrack. The "Troublemaker" Remix of the song, featuring De La Soul, is included on the soccer video game FIFA 10, and also included in NBA Live 10. The song also appears in The Sims 3: World Adventures, translated into Simlish.
Sidewalks is the third studio album by American duo Matt & Kim, consisting of keyboardist and vocalist Matt Johnson and drummer Kim Schifino. It follows their previous studio album Grand (2009), which the usage of its songs in commercials and TV series and the music video for "Lessons Learned" gained the duo popularity. Sidewalks continues Matt & Kim's basic and high-energy dance-punk synthpop style, but with a higher-fidelity sound courtesy of being recorded in professional studios instead of being self-recorded as was the case with their prior albums. Sidewalks was produced by Ben H. Allen and Oliver Straus.
Lightning is the fourth studio album from the indie pop duo Matt & Kim, written, produced, performed and recorded by them in their New York apartment between January and July 2012, using Logic Pro. The ten-track set is an electronic indie pop album which member Matt Johnson described as being upbeat, while on some tracks being a little darker. The group decided "to do as little possible to the songs production-wise and still have them be strong" unlike their previous studio project Sidewalks.
"Doin' It Right" is a song written and performed by French electronic music duo Daft Punk and American musician Panda Bear of the band Animal Collective. It is a track on Daft Punk's fourth studio album Random Access Memories (2013), and was the last to be recorded for the album. The song was distributed to American alternative radio stations on 3 September 2013 as the third single from Random Access Memories. Prior to this, it appeared on record charts in France, the United States and the United Kingdom due to digital downloads of the album. "Doin' It Right" received a positive critical reception, with some reviewers opining it as the group's best work out of the entire LP.
"I Was a Fool" is a song written and performed by Canadian duo Tegan and Sara for their seventh studio album, Heartthrob (2013). Inspired by Rihanna's singles "Unfaithful" and "Umbrella", the song is about a woman who is in a troubled relationship but doing nothing to fix it, making her seem like a fool.
Brothers Osborne is an American country music duo from Deale, Maryland. The duo consists of brothers TJ Osborne and John Osborne. The duo signed a recording contract with EMI Records Nashville in 2012 and began releasing music the following year. Their 2015 song "Stay a Little Longer" became a top five hit on the Billboard Hot Country Songs and Country Airplay charts, and their success led to the release of their debut studio album titled Pawn Shop the same year. Since then, Brothers Osborne have released the albums Port Saint Joe (2018), Skeletons (2020), and Brothers Osborne (2023).

"Chandelier" is a song by Australian singer and songwriter Sia, from her sixth studio album, 1000 Forms of Fear (2014). "Invincible" is a song by American singer Kelly Clarkson from her seventh studio album, Piece by Piece (2015). It was written by Sia, Jesse Shatkin, Steve Mostyn, and Warren "Oak" Felder. Produced by Shatkin, the track is an anthem about self-empowerment. "Invincible" features uncredited vocals from Sia, as well as string arrangements by Oliver Kraus. It was first released as the first promotional single from Piece by Piece on February 23, 2015, but then issued as the album's second single to Hot Adult Contemporary radio stations on May 18, 2015 through RCA Records.

"Sweet Creature" is a song by English singer Harry Styles from his self-titled debut studio album (2017). It was written by Styles and Kid Harpoon, while production was handled by the latter alongside Jeff Bhasker, Alex Salibian and Tyler Johnson. It was released for digital download and streaming as a promotional single on 2 May 2017, by Columbia Records. "Glow" is a song by the English new wave band Spandau Ballet, released on 27 March 1981 in the UK as a double A-side single with "Muscle Bound". The combined single was their third consecutive top 20 hit in their native UK, reaching number 10 on the UK Singles Chart. Elsewhere, "Glow" was released as the B-side with "Muscle Bound" as the A-side. "Glow" was written while their debut album, Journeys to Glory, was in the finishing stages and was subsequently not included, but a few different versions of the song were on the 2010 reissue of the album.
