Newyddion S4C (S4C News) is a Welsh-language news programme consisting of Welsh, UK, and international news, produced daily by BBC Cymru Wales and broadcast on S4C. Before S4C started broadcasting, Newyddion was seen as a regional opt-out on BBC One, usually broadcast around 7:00pm, [1] where it replaced programmes in the schedule such as Tomorrow's World. [2] The first Newyddion [3] on BBC One Wales was broadcast on 2nd Aug 1971 at 18:55pm [4] with the last BBC One Wales bulletin [5] seen on 29 October 1982 at 7:00pm, though Welsh-language television news dates back on the BBC to 6pm on 16 March 1956. Overview

The main evening programme (branded Newyddion) is broadcast each weekday evening at 7:30pm with shorter editions airing throughout the day and at varying times on Saturday and Sunday evenings.

Five-minute updates are broadcast at midday, mid-afternoon (2pm, 3pm) and evenings (8:55pm)

Dewi Llwyd, who presented the programme for almost 30 years, was dropped from the presentation team in 2013. [7]

S4C weather forecasts are now broadcast in the news programme after BBC Cymru Wales moved into its new headquarters in Central Square, Cardiff.[ citation needed ]

Awards

Newyddion won the 2012 BAFTA Cymru Award for News Coverage for a special programme broadcast from New York to mark the tenth anniversary of the 11 September 2001 attacks. [8]

At the 2013 BAFTA Cymru Awards ceremony Newyddion was mistakenly awarded the News Coverage award. The award was later correctly presented to ITV Cymru Wales. [9]

At the 2015 BAFTA Cymru Awards Newyddion9 was awarded the News Coverage Award for a special programme on the Paris Attacks.

They also won the News Coverage Award at the 2016 BAFTA Cymru awards for a programme about the refugee crisis.

Ratings

Viewing figures for Newyddion range from 180,000 to 250,000 according to S4C's weekly ratings report. [10]

Gwaith/Cartref is a Welsh language television series that in set in the comprehensive school of Bro Taf, broadcast on S4C. This is a timeline of the history of S4C, originally the fourth-oldest terrestrial television channel in Wales. Until 2010 it carried a mixture of Welsh language programmes and programmes from Channel 4 which was not broadcast on analogue TV in Wales. In 2010, Channel 4 became available in Wales on all platforms and S4C became a Welsh-language-only channel.
