Nicolas Walsh [1] [ better source needed ] is a Scottish football referee, currently a referee in the SPFL and a FIFA referee.
Walsh's first Scottish Professional Football League game as a referee came at the beginning of the Scottish League Two campaign, when he oversaw Clyde against Queen's Park. [2]
On 22 October 2022, Walsh refereed the second Scottish Premiership match with the video assistant referee (VAR), which saw Celtic beat Hearts 4–3. [3]
Walsh was selected as the referee for the 2024 Scottish Cup Final between Celtic and Rangers. During the match Walsh disallowed a goal scored by Rangers for an apparent infringement on the Celtic goalkeeper. The decision was criticised by Rangers manager Clement stating "its a really big call to disallow the goal when Celtic players are grabbing and pulling my players". [4]
Walsh was selected as the referee for the Europa League match between Ajax and Qarabag in October 2024. Walsh was heavily criticised after the match for sending off two Qarabag players. Ajax went on to win the match by 3 goals to nil. Qarabag manager Gurban Gurbanov stated "I found some of the referee’s choices very questionable". [5]
Following a review into refereeing decisions made in November 2024, it was found that Nick Walsh was wrong not to send off Celtic player Hatate during a match against Kilmarnock for a dangerous challenge. [6]
Walsh was criticised by Kilmarnock manager Derek McInnes after a Scottish Cup match between Celtic and Kilmarnock in January 2025. Celtic were awarded a freekick which they subsequently scored from with McInnes stating after the match "It's actually a free kick to us, Not even that, to not even give the free kick, the right decision, to us, they [Celtic] take it 20 yards from where the offence was, and they're way out the other side before we get a chance to settle". Walsh refereed the Europa League match between Union Saint-Gilloise and Braga in January 2025. During the match Walsh sent off 4 players and showed a total of 12 yellow cards. [8]
In January 2025 during a Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Dundee United Walsh was heavily criticised for sending off Rangers player Mohammed Diomande. The VAR referee asked Walsh to review his decision at the pitch side monitor but Walsh decided not to change his mind. Following the match several commentators criticised the decision with Ally McCoist describing it as '"one of the worst decisions he's ever seen'". [9] Premier sports commentators Allan Hutton and Michael Stewart described it as '"laughable"' and '"embarrassing'". Rangers appealed the decision and it was ultimately upheld by the review panel with the red card for violent conduct revoked. [10]
Charles Nicholas is a Scottish former professional footballer. A striker, Nicholas is best known for his spells at Celtic and Arsenal. He won 20 international caps for Scotland, including playing at the 1986 FIFA World Cup.
Derek John McInnes is a Scottish professional football manager and former player who is the manager of Scottish Premiership club Kilmarnock. Season 2008–09 for Hibernian was their tenth consecutive season of play in the Scottish Premier League. The SPL season began on 9 August 2008 with a 1–0 defeat at Kilmarnock. The team were eliminated from each cup competition at the first hurdle, due to defeats by IF Elfsborg in the last Intertoto Cup, Greenock Morton in the Scottish League Cup and Edinburgh derby rivals Hearts in the Scottish Cup. The 2010–11 season was the 117th season of competitive football by Celtic. New manager Neil Lennon made considerable changes to the Celtic team for the 2010–11 season. He sold Aiden McGeady for a then Scottish record £9.5 million along with captain Stephen McManus and fan favourite Artur Boruc. 13 other players also left the club, this gave Lennon enough funds to re-build for the new season. He looked to sign talented, young, cheap, relatively unknown players, from smaller leagues around the world. This paid off with players such as Gary Hooper, Beram Kayal and Emilio Izaguirre all having excellent seasons and earning many plaudits. Lennon also signed several experienced players on free transfers. Charlie Mulgrew, Joe Ledley, and Daniel Majstorović all went into the first team. In addition to these Lennon also signed five other players, including Fraser Forster on loan from Newcastle who became first choice goalkeeper and helped set a new SPL record for most clean sheets.
The Scottish football referee strike refers to the unprecedented withdrawal of services by top level referees in Scottish football, following a dispute between the Scottish Senior Football Referees' Association and the Scottish Football Association. It affected 20 matches scheduled for the weekend of 27/28 November 2010 in the Scottish Premier League, the Scottish Football League, the Scottish Cup, as well as the 2010 Scottish Challenge Cup Final. When combined with significant weather disruption, the effect of the strike was that only four games went ahead, all in the SPL on 27 November, using replacement referees drawn from Israel, Luxembourg and Malta. It was the first time since 1905 that a domestic Scottish match had been refereed by someone from outside Scotland.
