The North Suburban Conference (NSC) is an extra-curricular conference of eight high schools located in Lake County, Illinois, in the northern suburbs of Chicago. All of the schools are members of the Illinois High School Association (IHSA). [1]
Founded in 1948, seven schools located in the northern suburbs of Chicago banded together to create the North Suburban Conference, not to be confused with the Northwest Suburban Conference which was formed in 1925. The original members included Crystal Lake, Grayslake, Lake Forest, Libertyville, Gurnee Warren, Woodstock and Zion-Benton. In 1952, Grayslake and Barrington would switch conferences with Grayslake heading to the Northwest Suburban and Barrington joining the North Suburban. In 1953, McHenry joined the league and Dundee entered in 1957. In the same year, Lake Forest and Gurnee Warren would leave and join the Northwest Suburban. Similar to the previous mentioned switch, Palatine would join the conference from the Northwest Suburban, also in 1957 but eventually leave for the Tri County Conference in 1964. To replace Palatine, North Chicago left the Tri County to join the North Suburban, also in 1964.
The league would continue for ten years, but in 1973 Woodstock would leave and Lake Forest would come back. In addition to Lake Forest, the conference also welcomed Dundee-Crown and Mundelein that same year, taking the total number of schools to 10. Five schools would leave the conference in the late 1970s, Dundee in 1976, Barrington in 1977 and Crown, Crystal Lake and McHenry all exiting for the newly formed Fox Valley Conference in 1978. Unfortunately the league could only add Maine North, from the O'Hare Suburban Conference, as a replacement school to keep the total at six. The following year, in 1979, as the conference pushed to expand, Fenton, from the O'Hare Suburban, Niles North, from the Central Suburban and West Leyden, from the Des Plaines Valley, all joined the league.
As the 1980s began, the conference totaled 9, however, in 1981, Maine North would close and West Leyden consolidated with East Leyden who was a member of the Des Plaines Valley, taking the total back down to 7 schools. Stevenson joined in 1982 and Antioch in 1983. Gurnee Warren made their return in 1983 as well. For the remainder of the 1980s the conference stayed status quo at 10 schools. After the 1991 school year, Niles North would leave and Fenton would do the same in 1995.
Four schools would be added for the 2000 school year and the league would be broken into 2 divisions. The existing schools; Antioch, Lake Forest, Libertyville, Mundelein, Stevenson and Warren formed the Lake Division and new comers; Grant, Round Lake, Vernon Hills, and Wauconda would join existing members North Chicago and Zion-Benton in the Prairie Division. The primary criteria for the separate divisions is school size, with the schools in the Lake Division being larger than the schools in the Prairie Division. In 2005, Lake Zurich joined the Lake Division and Lakes High School would be placed in the Prairie Division. Additionally, Antioch and Zion-Benton would switch divisions. [2]
Beginning with the 2016-17 athletic season, the NSC reduced its size as the members of the Prairie Division elected to leave the conference to form the Northern Lake County Conference. This conference consists of Antioch, Lakes, Grayslake Central, Grayslake North, Waucounda, Round Lake, Grant, and North Chicago. Vernon Hills also left the conference to join the Central Suburban League. The new NSC also welcomed Waukegan during the 2016–17 season.

The NSC sponsors competition for teams of young men and women in: basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, volleyball, and track & field. [11] There is also sponsorship for young men to compete in baseball, football, and wrestling, while there is sponsorship for young women in dance, cheer, badminton, bowling, and softball. [11]

Gurnee is a village and suburb in Lake County, Illinois, United States. Its population was 30,706 as of the 2020 census. It borders the city of Waukegan, and is a popular tourist attraction within the Chicago metropolitan area.
Libertyville is a village in Lake County, Illinois, United States, and a northern suburb of Chicago. It is located 5 miles (8 km) west of Lake Michigan along the Des Plaines River. The 2020 census population was 20,579. It is part of Libertyville Township, which includes the village, neighboring Green Oaks, and portions of Vernon Hills, Mundelein, unincorporated Waukegan and Lake Forest, and part of Knollwood CDP. Libertyville neighbors these communities as well as Gurnee to the north and Grayslake to the northwest. Libertyville is about 40 miles north of the Chicago Loop and is part of the United States Census Bureau's Chicago combined statistical area (CSA).

The Fox Valley Conference is an IHSA recognized high school extracurricular conference including the following schools, generally located in the northern part of the Fox River basin in Illinois, United States. The conference regularly produces strong athletic teams, including 6A Football State Champions Prairie Ridge (2016-17) and Cary-Grove ; 2017 4A State Baseball Champion Crystal Lake South; and 2019 4A State Softball Champion Huntley.
The Central Suburban League is an IHSA-recognized high school extracurricular conference comprising 12 public schools located in the North Shore suburbs of Chicago. Comprising 12 relatively large high schools, it is among the larger high school conferences in Illinois.
Knollwood is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Lake County, Illinois, United States. Per the 2020 census, the population was 2,221. It is located within Shields Township and Libertyville Township. Knollwood shares a ZIP Code with the neighboring village of Lake Bluff, and children attend Lake Bluff schools. The residents of Knollwood were served by the Knollwood Fire Department until October 2018, after the trustees of the Rockland Fire Protection District ended their relationship with the department. Residents now receive fire protection from the Libertyville and Lake Forest fire departments. Police protection is provided by the Lake County Sheriff's Department.

The village of Libertyville is part of the township, as are parts of Green Oaks, Lake Bluff, Lake Forest, Mettawa, Mundelein, North Chicago, Rondout, Vernon Hills and Waukegan.
Newport Township is a township in Lake County, Illinois, USA. As of the 2010 census, its population was 6,770. It includes most parts of the villages of Old Mill Creek and Wadsworth, as well as smaller portions of the villages of Antioch, Beach Park, and a corner of the city of Waukegan. Warren Township is a township in Lake County, Illinois, USA. As of the 2020 census, its population was 65,883. The cities of Gurnee, Park City, and Grayslake lie within its borders. The township was established in 1850 by settlers who came from the town of Warren, New York. Both were named in honor of Major General Joseph Warren, killed at the Battle of Bunker Hill.
Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital (NLFH) is a community-based hospital in Lake Forest, Illinois, United States, and a wholly owned subsidiary of Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, one of the nation's premiere academic medical centers. The hospital was established in 1899 as Alice Home on the campus of Lake Forest College, and in 1942 a new hospital was built in its current location as Lake Forest Hospital. On February 1, 2010, Lake Forest Hospital completed an affiliation agreement with Northwestern Memorial HealthCare and became Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital.
The Mid-Suburban League (MSL) is an Illinois High School Association recognized high school extra-curricular league which includes 12 schools located in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. The conference is split up into two divisions for all interscholastic activities. The primary criteria for the separate divisions is geography, with the schools in the West Division being located west of IL Route 53 and the schools of the East Division being east of it. However, the schools of the western division are also larger than the schools of the eastern division.
