Amir Mohamed el Khalifa [2] (born on February 24, 1985), [3] better known by his stage name Oddisee, is a rapper and record producer from Washington, D.C. [4] He is one third of the rap trio Diamond District. [5] He was also part of the Low Budget Crew. [6] He is based in Brooklyn, New York. [7]

Early life

Oddisee was born to an African-American mother and a Sudanese father, [8] at Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C. [9] He was raised by his stepmother (who was also Sudanese) and father. [8] He grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland, [8] as well as Prince George's County, Maryland. [10] He moved to Washington, D.C. after high school. [10]

Career

In 2010, Oddisee released Traveling Man on Mello Music Group. [11] His Odd Spring mixtape was listed on the Washington Post's Best Local Hip-Hop mixtapes of 2010. [12] In 2011, Oddisee released Rock Creek Park, which was ranked as a Mixtape of the Week by Stereogum . [13] Odd Seasons, a collection of EPs released throughout the previous 12 months, was also released that year. [14]

In 2012, he released a studio album, People Hear What They See . [15] The Beauty in All, his first instrumental release since Rock Creek Park, was released in 2013. [16] In that year, he also released Tangible Dream. [17] In 2015, he released The Good Fight . [18] In 2016, he released an EP, Alwasta, and a mixtape, The Odd Tape. [19] In 2017, he released a studio album, The Iceberg , [20] as well as a live album, Beneath the Surface. [21]

Style and influences

Oddisee was originally influenced by Black American Jazz traditions and the Golden Age of Hip-Hop sounds from his older American cousins. Oddisee was primarily influenced by Black American musical traditions. Growing up next door to Parliament Funkadelic's bass player Gary Shider in P.G. County, Maryland left a deep musical impact on the young Oddisee. He is also influenced by Gospel music and the vocal harmonizing traditions of his Black American heritage. In an interview with NPR, he explained why he was influenced by early East Coast emcees such as Eric B. & Rakim, De La Soul, and A Tribe Called Quest. He stated that these rappers don't talk about drugs or murder, and he could relate more to their lyrics. [10]

Wale signed with English DJ-producer Mark Ronson's Allido Records in 2007, and after a three-label bidding war, he entered a joint venture with Interscope Records for US$1.3 million the following year. During this time, Wale's mixtapes and singles saw national attention as he appeared on MTV and various Black America-focused magazines.

Bobby Ray Simmons Jr., known professionally as B.o.B, is an American rapper, singer, and record producer. Raised in Decatur, Georgia, Simmons signed with producer Jim Jonsin through his Rebel Rock Entertainment label in 2006. Two years later, he signed a joint venture recording contract with fellow Georgia rapper T.I.'s Grand Hustle Records, an imprint of Atlantic Records. Following his major-label deal, Simmons quickly achieved commercial success when his 2009 debut single, "Nothin' on You", peaked the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and received three nominations—Record of the Year, Best Rap Song, and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration—at the 53rd Grammy Awards.

Juaquin James Malphurs, known professionally as Waka Flocka Flame, is an American rapper from Atlanta, Georgia. He first became known for his 2009 single "O Let's Do It," which entered the Billboard Hot 100 and led him to sign with Gucci Mane's 1017 Records, an imprint of Warner Records that same year. His 2010 follow-up single, "No Hands" reached number 13 on the chart and received diamond certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Both songs, along with "Hard in da Paint" and "Grove St. Party", preceded the release of his debut studio album Flockaveli (2010), which peaked at number six on the Billboard 200. His second studio album, Triple F Life: Friends, Fans & Family (2012) peaked at number ten on the chart and was supported by the singles "Round of Applause", "I Don't Really Care" and "Get Low".

The Jet Age of Tomorrow is an American production duo from Atlanta, Georgia and a sub-group of hip hop collective Odd Future that consists of producer-singer Matt Martians, and producer-rapper Pyramid Vritra. According to Martians, the group's music originated from instrumentals turned down by Tyler, the Creator and Hodgy, who liked the tracks Martians sent them, but could not use them in their own music. Outside of their work with the Jet Age, Martians is a member of The Internet with Odd Future member Syd, while Vritra is a member of his own Atlanta hip hop collective, NRK.

Malcolm James McCormick, known professionally as Mac Miller, was an American rapper, singer-songwriter, and record producer. Miller began his career in Pittsburgh's local hip hop scene in 2007, at the age of 15. In 2010, he signed a record deal with independent label Rostrum Records and released his breakthrough mixtapes K.I.D.S. (2010) and Best Day Ever (2011). Throughout 2012 and 2013, he was featured on many of the collective's projects and towards the end of 2013, he released his critically acclaimed mixtape Thee Way Eye See It.

Mello Music Group (MMG) is an American independent record label based in Tucson, Arizona. Founded in 2007, Mello Music has released hip hop compilations and albums by producers and rappers such as Oddisee, Apollo Brown, Mr. Lif, Ghostface Killah, Open Mike Eagle, L'Orange, Quelle Chris, Jean Grae, Kool Keith, Nottz, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Pete Rock, and Rapper Big Pooh. In 2012, MTV Hive described MMG as having a "dedication to intelligent, street-wise boom bap", although the label has released a number of purely instrumental albums as well. In 2016, Forbes magazine called Mello Music Group the most successful indie rap label of the decade.

Hal Donell Williams Jr., known professionally as Pyramid Vritra, is an American rapper and record producer. Aside from his solo career, he is also a member of Los Angeles–based hip hop collective Odd Future via the sub-group The Jet Age of Tomorrow alongside Matt Martians, and Atlanta-based hip hop collective NRK. He has released music under Stones Throw Records, Alpha Pup's The Order Label, and Bad Taste Records.
