In October 2010, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton created the Office of the Senior Advisor for Civil Society and Emerging Democracies, and appointed Tomicah Tillemann to lead its work. In coordination with other State Department bureaus, the office is responsible for developing and implementing the Secretary of State's civil society agenda and strengthen emerging democracies. [1] The office reports directly to the Secretary of State.

The National Security Advisor is appointed by the President and does not require confirmation by the Senate, but an appointment of a three or four-star general to the role requires Senate reconfirmation of military rank.

Assistant Secretary of State (A/S) is a title used for many executive positions in the United States Department of State, ranking below the Under Secretaries. A set of six Assistant Secretaries reporting to the Under Secretary for Political Affairs manage diplomatic missions within their designated geographic regions, plus one Assistant Secretary dealing with international organizations. Assistant Secretaries usually manage individual bureaus of the Department of State.
