The Most Distinguished Order of Paduka Seri Laila Jasa [1] (Malay : Darjah Paduka Seri Laila Jasa Yang Amat Berjasa), also translated as The Most Distinguished Order of Merit of Brunei, [2] is an order of Brunei. It was established in February 1964 by Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III. [2]

Description

The first class included 14 medallions measuring 1,100 millimetres (43 in) in silver, gold, and enamel, along with the badge appendant, measuring 60 millimetres (2.4 in) in silver, gold, and enamel; the star, measuring 83 millimetres (3.3 in) in silver, gold, and enamel, with a gold retaining pin and the maker's cartouche on the reverse, and presented in a fitted leather case with a miniature award. [3]

The pre-1984 first class consisted of a badge and star with two lions on them. The second class adopted the Bruneian crown in place of lions when Brunei gained official independence from Britain in 1984. [3]

Pengiran Anak Mohamed Alam was a nobleman, magistrate, and politician who served as the fourth Speaker of the Legislative Council from 1971 to 1974, and as the Chief of Adat Istiadat Negara from 1954 to 1981. A member of the Bruneian royal family, he was the father of Pengiran Anak Saleha, the queen consort of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah. He was also the maternal grandfather of Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince of Brunei.

The Sultan Omar 'Ali Saifuddien College (SOASC), natively known as Maktab Sultan Omar 'Ali Saifuddien (MSOAS), is a government boys' secondary school in Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei. It is the first English secondary school in the country. The school is also one of the only three boys' secondary schools nationwide, with the other two being Muda Hashim Secondary School and Ma'had Islam Brunei. The school provides five years of secondary education leading up to GCE 'O' Level and IGCSE qualification.

Husin bin Ahmad, sometimes spelled Hussin Ahmad, is a Bruneian aristocrat, diplomat and retired military officer who served as the first commander of the Royal Brunei Land Forces (RBLF) from 1991 to 1994, and later the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) from 1994 until 1997.

The Manteri are a group of royal dignitaries within the Sultanate of Brunei whose position ranks the fourth-highest official in the country behind the Sultan. There are two main groups in the Manteri, namely the Manteri Berchiri and the Manteri Bertauliah. Each person who is given a position in the Manteri is also given a certain title. They are also referred to in official speech and correspondence with specific honorific references. The title of Manteri is given to ordinary people and is held in a ceremony, which for the awarding of the title of Pehin Manteri, it is known as "menyampiri gelaran".

Pengiran Abdul Momin bin Pengiran Othman was a nobleman, diplomat and politician in the Government of Brunei who took office as the Ambassador of Brunei to Indonesia from 1993 to 2001. Additionally, he was a member of the Privy Council, Legislative Council, Islamic Legislative Council and Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Foundation from 1992 to 2004.

Pengiran Mokhtar Puteh bin Pengiran Rajid or also spelled Mokhtar Putih, was a nobleman and a civil servant from Brunei who served in several high-ranking positions which included being a member of the Privy Council and vice-president of the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council. He was known for his active involvement in charitable work and sport activities throughout his life.

Mohammad Ariffin bin Haji Abdul Wahab is a Bruneian aristocrat, businessman and retired military officer, who served as the commander of the Training Institute Royal Brunei Armed Forces from 1975 to 1979. In 1976, he became one of the first two local personnel to be promoted to lieutenant colonel alongside Sulaiman Damit.

Pengiran Anak Idris is a Bruneian nobleman and member of the royal family who became the prince consort to Princess Amal Umi Kalthum Al-Islam in 1972, the daughter of Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III. He is the current Chief of Jabatan Adat Istiadat Negara, a member of the Privy Council of Brunei, and assistant chairman of Adat Istiadat Council, and Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah's board of governors.

<i>Jabatan Adat Istiadat Negara</i> Department in charge of customs and ceremonies of Brunei

The Jabatan Adat Istiadat Negara is a government department under the Prime Minister's Office that functions to guarantee the constant maintenance of Royal Customs. It has been translated literally as the Office of State Customs, the Department of the State Customs or the State Department of Customs and Traditions, even though it does not have an English name. In order to guarantee that the practice and implementation, particularly the Istiadat Diraja, are always in accordance with the philosophy of Melayu Islam Beraja, preaching and teaching the public through lectures, briefings, and workshops on Adat Istiadat (Customs) are regularly held.
