"Palm Mall" |
Palm Mall is the sixth studio album by Cat System Corp., the alias of Dutch electronic musician Jornt Elzinga. Released on 2 October 2014, its nine tracks use samples of elevator music to explore shopping malls. Following the success of Hiraeth (2014), Elzinga drew inspiration from the "vaporwave vibe" he felt in the video game Grand Theft Auto V (2013), and produced Palm Mall as his first "serious try" at a mallsoft release. [1] It was a turning point for Elzinga's music and is his favorite release of the Cat System Corp. discography, featuring participation of several other vaporwave musicians.
The first track comprises 20 minutes of music, sampling a range of material and being characterised by an ambient style. Tracks 2–9 are shorter and feature other types of samples. All tracks reflect the ambiance of a mall, as well as themes of capitalism and consumerism. Elzinga later continued with the concept of Palm Mall in Shopping @ Helsinki (2016) and Palm Mall Mars (2018). The record was featured on an article about a "vaporwave mall", [2] and its repetition of source material was compared by Elzinga to the Wilhelm scream.
Palm Mall received generally favorable reviews from critics; its ambiance and themes led many to describe it as ambiguous in its portrayal of consumerism. Considered Elzinga's most successful release, Palm Mall peaked as one of the best-selling vaporwave albums on Bandcamp. It has been called the "definitive mallsoft release" by multiple writers, and is generally considered an influence in the development of the vaporwave scene.
In 2014, Dutch musician Jornt Elzinga started alias Cat System Corp. for releasing vaporwave music after discovering the genre. [1] [lower-alpha 1] Elzinga was inspired by his nostalgia from the world before the September 11 attacks, a concept later explored on his 2016 album News at 11 . [4] He was influenced by musicians such as Macintosh Plus and Luxury Elite. [5] In 2014, Elzinga released Hiraeth, which received praise from the vaporwave community. He felt inspired to produce Palm Mall after hearing the Jay Rock song "Hood Gone Love It" in Grand Theft Auto V , describing the video game itself as "GTA Vaporwave". [1]
The tracks, which Elzinga says explore "the concept of Muzak mixed with modern sound and popular Internet culture", [6] present themes of embracing capitalism, [4] [7] and portray the ambient sound of shopping malls. [8] Bandcamp Daily suggested that, as a record derived from Elzinga's nostalgia, Palm Mall "finds [the] clearest expression" of the "glorification of the unreal". [4] The tracks feature electronic production in Adobe Premiere mixed with sample-based ambiance; [6] [9] music magazine Fact mentioned the album in an article about the "first vaporwave mall". [2] Author Samuel Cothron praised Palm Mall's reach into vaporwave's "ironic zenith", while vaporwave publication VWMusic wrote that the album serves as "a proverbial gateway" for new listeners. [8] [1]
The album's sampling of mall sounds was compared to The Orchards (2019) by North Shore Memory Gardens, although its more casual electronic sound differs from the cavernous tone of other works by Elzinga. [8] Writer Ícaro Estivalet Raimund said the artwork, created digitally by musician CVLTVRE, [10] presents the artificiality of an ideal mall, and "plays" with real representations we have of shopping centers. [11] The ambient style of the 20-minute long eponymous first track features samples that repeat constantly, particularly a man saying "I'm gonna grab my laptop and put it over here", which Elzinga compared to the Wilhelm scream. [4] In the last eight tracks, lengths range from two to nearly five minutes, with the last track featuring an audio clip from a Newmarket North Mall TV commercial. [6]
Palm Mall received generally positive reactions upon release, [7] [4] [8] with one writer exemplifying its focus on shopping malls as symbolising mallsoft's exploration of "consumerism emblematic of the past". [12] In October 2014, it peaked as the 24th best-selling vaporwave album on Bandcamp. [13] In interviews, Elzinga stated his favorite release of the Cat System Corp. discography is Palm Mall, and along with Hiraeth, are "some of my best". [1] He later released two albums with similar themes, Shopping @ Helsinki (2016) and Palm Mall Mars (2018). [4] [5]
The album was praised for its portrayal of shopping malls, particularly in its first track. Author Miguel Principe highlighted the composition's sampling of advertisements and conversations as giving it a "background music" style. [14] He found the record's existence within the vaporwave community as an example of music "manipulated to a degree that is both recognizable of its past roots yet remarkably separate from its source material". [12] Samuel Cothron, while describing the mallsoft genre, considered Palm Mall "so pleasant and warm" in its interpretation of mall culture, although also regarding this as occurring "maybe only because our society has normalized the fetishization of shopping". Vaporwave is a microgenre of electronic music and a subgenre of hauntology, a visual art style, and an Internet meme that emerged in the early 2010s, and became well-known in 2015. It is defined partly by its slowed-down, chopped and screwed samples of smooth jazz, 1970s elevator music, R&B, and lounge music from the 1980s and 1990s. The surrounding subculture is sometimes associated with an ambiguous or satirical take on consumer capitalism and pop culture, and tends to be characterized by a nostalgic or surrealist engagement with the popular entertainment, technology and advertising of previous decades. Visually, it incorporates early Internet imagery, late 1990s web design, glitch art, anime, stylized Greek sculptures, 3D-rendered objects, and cyberpunk tropes in its cover artwork and music videos.

Ryan DeRobertis is an American electronic musician and singer who grew up in Farmingville, New York and attended Boston College for two years studying music. His electronic music project SAINT PEPSI began in December 2012. After the release of his ninth studio album Hit Vibes in May 2013, he would retire the SAINT PEPSI name due to legal threats from the soft-drink company PepsiCo. He would adopt the name Skylar Spence in 2015, and release his debut record under that moniker, Prom King. In 2019, he would return under the name SAINT PEPSI with the release of Mannequin Challenge, and he currently uses that name for live performances and certain releases.

No Stairway is the debut studio album of Glassine, the musical project of Danny Greenwald, first released online and later issued on cassette worldwide by the label Patient Sounds, in April and August 2015, respectively. The title is a reference to a line from the 1992 film Wayne's World. The album garnered significant attention from music journalists for its compositional and production technique. In two Guitar Center stores, Greenwald tapped people playing instruments on his iPhone, and used snippets of these low-quality trackings as loops or synth patches, playing some of them through effects pedals or 4-track machines. The "dystopian" environment of Guitar Center shops and his desire to record something without a budget while in New York City is what inspired his idea to use samples of recordings of people playing instruments and build compositions out of them. On Fact's year-end list of best Bandcamp releases, No Stairway came in at number 19.
Birth of a New Day is the second studio album by English-American electronic music duo of dreampunk producers David Russo and Luke Laurila or Telepath, both collaborating under the alias 2814. It was released on January 21, 2015 by HKE's record label Dream Catalogue. With the popularity of vaporwave in the early to mid-2010s, the duo experimented with the genre by not using any form of samples to compose the album, thus becoming notable for being one of the first vaporwave releases not to include such production techniques. 2814 stated that they wanted it to "have a strong sense of place"; its themes reflect the dark worldviews of HKE.

Everywhere at the End of Time is the eleventh recording by the Caretaker, an alias of English electronic musician Leyland Kirby. Released between 2016 and 2019, its six studio albums use degrading loops of sampled ballroom music to portray the progression of Alzheimer's disease. Inspired by the success of An Empty Bliss Beyond This World (2011), Kirby produced Everywhere as his final major work under the alias. The albums were produced in Kraków and released over six-month periods to "give a sense of time passing", with abstract album covers by his friend Ivan Seal. The series drew comparisons to the works of composer William Basinski and electronic musician Burial, while the later stages were influenced by avant-gardist composer John Cage.
