Pancha Delima is officially known in Malay as Kampung Pancha Delima (Kampung is sometimes spelt as Kampong), [4] which literally means 'Pancha Delima Village'.

Malay is a major language of the Austronesian family spoken in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. A language of the Malays, it is spoken by 290 million people across the Strait of Malacca, including the coasts of the Malay Peninsula of Malaysia and the eastern coast of Sumatra in Indonesia and has been established as a native language of part of western coastal Sarawak and West Kalimantan in Borneo. It is also used as a trading language in the southern Philippines, including the southern parts of the Zamboanga Peninsula, the Sulu Archipelago and the southern predominantly Muslim-inhabited municipalities of Bataraza and Balabac in Palawan.

Pancha Delima is located in the central part of Brunei-Muara District. It is one of the neighbourhoods in the capital Bandar Seri Begawan and contiguous with the residential neighbourhoods of Pengiran Siraja Muda to the east, Orang Kaya Besar Imas to the south-east and Anggerek Desa to the south. History

Pancha Delima was one of the areas designated by the government of Brunei for the relocation of Kampong Ayer residents to resettle on land, under the National Resettlement Scheme in the 1950s. [6] The residents of Pancha Delima who were under the relocation programme resettled in the area in 1958 and they originally came from the Kampong Ayer neighbourhoods of Sumbiling Lama and Sultan Lama. [2]

Kampong Ayer is a historical settlement area in Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei. It literally means 'water village'. Kampong Ayer consists of a cluster of traditional stilt villages built on the Brunei River, mainly in the vicinity of the present-day Pusat Bandar or the City Centre. Hence, it has often been dubbed as 'Venice of the East' since the past. Kampong Ayer has been historically the principal settlement of Brunei; it was the de facto capital, in particular social and economic centre, of the Bruneian Empire for a few centuries, but also extending into the early period during British imperialism in Brunei.

Administration

The area of Pancha Delima is officially administered as a village, the third- and lowest-level administrative division of Brunei. It is one of the village-level subdivisions under Berakas 'A', a mukim or subdistrict of Brunei-Muara. However, its community is currently administered together with that of neighbouring Anggerek Desa under a single village head (Malay : ketua kampung) and the incumbent is Zulkifli bin Awang Ya'akub; [2] [1] [3] he is also the acting Village Head of Orang Kaya Besar Imas and Pulaie. Berakas 'A' is a mukim or subdistrict of Brunei-Muara, Brunei. It borders the mukims of Mentiri and Berakas 'B' to the east, Kianggeh to the south, Gadong 'B' to the south-west and Gadong 'A' to the west, as well as the South China Sea to the north. The community of Berakas 'A' is headed by a penghulu and the incumbent is Abdul Ahmad bin Husain. In 2011, the population of Berakas 'A' was 31,180.
