Phumzile Harriet Mbatha-Cele is a South African politician who has represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature since August 2016. She is also a former Mayor of Newcastle.

Political career

Mbatha-Cele is from Amajuba in KwaZulu-Natal. [1] She was the Mayor of Newcastle [2] in Amajuba until May 2007, when opposition parties in the Newcastle council collaborated to remove her and her deputy from office; she was replaced by Mercy Dube of the Inkatha Freedom Party. [3] By 2015, she was the Deputy Regional Secretary of the ANC's eMalahleni regional branch in KwaZulu-Natal. [4] She was still in that office on 29 August 2016, when she sworn in as a Member of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature; she filled a casual vacancy created by the resignation of Makhosini Nkosi, who became Mayor of Newcastle after the 2016 local elections. [1]

In May 2018, Mbatha-Cele was elected Deputy Regional Chairperson of the ANC in eMalahleni, deputising Ntuthuko Mahlaba. [5] She was elected to her first full term in the legislature in the 2019 general election, ranked 36th on the ANC's provincial party list. [6] However, in September 2021, she was succeeded as ANC Deputy Regional Chairperson by Phumzile Mgcina. [7]

He served as Co-Chairperson of the Joint Standing Committee on Defence and as Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Defence and Military Veterans. Ntuthuko Mbongiseni Sibiya, known as Jomo Sibiya, is a South African politician who served as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Human Settlements and Public Works in KwaZulu-Natal from March 2021 until August 2022. A member of the African National Congress, Sibiya was elected to the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature in 2014.

Mbalenhle Cleopatra Frazer, commonly known as Mbali Frazer, is a South African politician and former educator who was KwaZulu-Natal's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Education from August 2022 until June 2024. She has served in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature as an African National Congress MPL since 2014. Frazer was elected deputy provincial chairperson of the African National Congress Women's League in August 2023.

Nkululeko Ntuthuko Mahlaba is a South African politician and healthcare practitioner. A member of the African National Congress, he serves as the party's provincial treasurer in KwaZulu-Natal as well as the chairperson of the party's Mbuso Kubheka Region. From August 2022 to May 2023, he was the MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works and he then served as the MEC for Sports, Arts and Culture from August 2022 until June 2024. Mahlaba previously served as the executive mayor of the Newcastle Local Municipality from 2019 to 2021.

Lungi Annette Mnganga-Gcabashe is a South African politician who has been the Deputy President of the African National Congress Women's League since July 2023. She formerly represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 2014 to 2019. In 2020 she was appointed chief of staff in the office of Pemmy Majodina, the Chief Whip of the Majority Party in the National Assembly. She was formerly a Member of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature from 1999 to 2004 and chaired the KwaZulu-Natal branch of the ANC Women's League from 2008 to 2012. The Executive Council of KwaZulu-Natal is the cabinet of the executive branch of the provincial government in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal. The Members of the Executive Council (MECs) are appointed from among the members of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature by the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, an office held since May 2024 by Thami Ntuli of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).

Sipho Joseph Gcabashe is a South African politician and businessman who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature until 2019, when he failed to gain re-election. He was also Provincial Secretary of the ANC's KwaZulu-Natal branch from 1996 to 2005.

Phumzile Sinclatia Mgcina is a South African politician who is currently serving as Deputy Minister of Employment and Labour since July 2024. She has been the deputy president of the African National Congress (ANC) Youth League since July 2023.
