He was the Provincial Leader of the KwaZulu-Natal Democratic Alliance (DA) from 2015 to 2021. Mncwango was the party's KwaZulu-Natal Premier candidate for the 2019 election.
Sihle Zikalala is a South African politician from KwaZulu-Natal who has been the Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure and a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa since 2023,representing the African National Congress. Before his redeployment to the national government,he had been the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs in KwaZulu-Natal and a Member of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature.
The 2021 South African municipal elections were held on 1 November 2021,to elect councils for all district,metropolitan and local municipalities in each of the country's nine provinces. It is the sixth municipal election held in South Africa since the end of apartheid in 1994,held every five years. The previous municipal elections were held in 2016. On 21 April 2021,President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the elections will be held on Wednesday,27 October 2021. It had been recommend by Dikgang Moseneke to delay the municipal elections until 2022. The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) requested the Constitutional Court to support the date postponement. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) supported the date postponement while the Democratic Alliance (DA) was against the postponement of the date. The Constitutional Court dismissed the application to postpone the date until 2022,ruling that they had to take place between 27 October and 1 November. On 9 September 2021,the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs,Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma announced that the elections would be held on 1 November.
Thomas Mxolisi Kaunda is a South African politician from KwaZulu-Natal serving as the Mayor of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality since 2019. He was the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport,Community Safety and Liaison from 2016 to 2019 and a member of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature from 2009 to 2019. Kaunda is a member of the ruling African National Congress (ANC).

The 2021 South African unrest,also known as the July 2021 riots,the Zuma unrest or Zuma riots,was a wave of civil unrest that occurred in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng provinces from 9 to 18 July 2021,sparked by the imprisonment of former President Jacob Zuma for contempt of court. Resulting protests against the incarceration triggered wider rioting and looting,much of it said to be undertaken by people not in support of Zuma and fuelled by job layoffs and economic inequality worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic policies. The unrest began in the province of KwaZulu-Natal on the evening of 9 July,and spread to the province of Gauteng on the evening of 11 July,and was the worst violence that South Africa had experienced since the end of Apartheid.

Thembeka Vuyisile Buyisile Mchunu is a South African politician from KwaZulu-Natal serving as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa since 2019. A member of the African National Congress,she served as the Executive Mayor of the Uthungulu District Municipality from 2011 to 2016. She is married to Senzo Mchunu,the current Minister of Water and Sanitation and the former premier of KwaZulu-Natal.
Philani Godfrey Mavundla is a South African politician and business tycoon who served as the Deputy Mayor of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality from 2021 until 2022. He is the founder and current leader of the Abantu Batho Congress,a party he founded in early-2020 after he resigned from the National Freedom Party (NFP). Mavundla is also a former African National Congress (ANC) member. He served as the mayor of the Umvoti Local Municipality while a member of the African National Congress.
Ntuthuko Mbongiseni Sibiya,known as Jomo Sibiya,is a South African politician who served as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Human Settlements and Public Works in KwaZulu-Natal from March 2021 until August 2022. A member of the African National Congress,Sibiya was elected to the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature in 2014.
Nkululeko Ntuthuko Mahlaba is a South African politician and healthcare practitioner. A member of the African National Congress,he serves as the party's provincial treasurer in KwaZulu-Natal as well as the chairperson of the party's Mbuso Kubheka Region. Since August 2022,he has been the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) responsible for Human Settlements and Public Works in the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government. Mahlaba previously served as the executive mayor of the Newcastle Local Municipality from 2019 to 2021.
Mdumiseni Ntuli is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature from May 2016 to July 2018. He left the legislature to serve as Provincial Secretary of the ANC's KwaZulu-Natal branch,an office he held between 2018 and 2022.
James Sikhosiphi Nxumalo is a South African politician who has represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature since 2019. He was formerly the Mayor of eThekwini from 2011 to 2016,and during that time he was engaged in a strident political rivalry with Zandile Gumede,who became his successor. He was elected to a five-year term on the Central Committee of the South African Communist Party (SACP) in 2022,and he has served as the Provincial Chairperson of the SACP's KwaZulu-Natal branch for over a decade.
Bheki Ntuli is a South African politician who is active in the African National Congress (ANC) of KwaZulu-Natal. He is known for his tenure as Regional Secretary of the ANC's eThekwini branch,an office he held from 2015 to 2019. He subsequently led the branch as its interim coordinator from 2020 until 2022,when he was voted out of the leadership by allies of Zandile Gumede. In July 2022,he was elected to a four-year term on the Provincial Executive Committee of the ANC's KwaZulu-Natal branch.
Belinda Francis Scott is a South African politician who was KwaZulu-Natal's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Finance from 2014 to 2019. She served several terms in the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature from 1994 to 2019,representing the African National Congress (ANC) from 2002 onwards after defecting from both the Democratic Party and the Inkatha Freedom Party. After she left the provincial legislature in 2019,she served as Deputy Mayor of eThekwini from September 2019 until she resigned from politics in February 2021.
