Portuguese Flat was a California mining camp of the early 1850s during the California Gold Rush, consisting largely of Portuguese miners. It was located about 35 miles north of Redding, California near what is currently now the unincorporated community of Pollard Flat. It is in the ZIP code area of 96051 and the area code 530.
Arising along the route of the Siskiyou Trail, Portuguese Flat, with its rich diggings, gained the reputation of being one of the roughest camps in northern Shasta County; it was also known as a "squaw town" because of the number of Native American women present in the town. By the time of the 1885 census, it appears that the site was deserted.
As late as 1933, just north of Pollard's Gulch on what is now Interstate 5, one could see a few old tumbledown buildings, one ancient log cabin, and some veteran apple trees — all that remained of Portuguese Flat. Pioneers Ross McCloud and Mary Campbell McCloud operated an inn in Portuguese Flat from approximately 1853–5 (before going on to operate the inn at Upper Soda Springs).
In the story of the famous "Battle of Castle Crags" (which took place in 1855), a young Joaquin Miller tells a dramatic tale of being seriously wounded, by having an arrow shot through his jaw and neck. Miller was taken to the Portuguese Flat inn operated by the McClouds to recuperate, and was nursed to health by Mary Campbell McCloud.

Seiad Valley is a small unincorporated community in Siskiyou County, California situated 15 miles south of the Oregon border. A population of approximately 300 people is clustered around the Klamath River, State Route 96, and spread out along the surrounding creeks. The three craggy peaks of the Lower Devils look over the forested valley, which is completely surrounded on all sides by the green Klamath Mountains, just north of the Marble Mountains Wilderness area. The Pacific Crest Trail, which runs all the way from Canada to Mexico, passes through the West Side of Seiad Valley. A general store/cafe/post office, an elementary school, a small trailer park, a volunteer fire house, forest service station, gas station and the historic Wildwood Tavern and Lodge make up central portion of the town; beyond that are small agricultural/herding fields, a scattering of residences, and the bridges crossing the Klamath River. Seiad Valley is within zip code 96086, but itself is not incorporated and so has no strictly defined boundaries.

Battle Rock is a historical site of the Battle of the Crags at Castle Crags in Castella, California in Shasta County. Battle Rock site is a California Historical Landmark No. 116 listed on March 29, 1933. The Battle of the Crags took place below Battle Rock in June 1855. The battle was fought on a ridge saddle between the Castle lake and Battle Rock. Battle of the Crags was a battle between the Modoc people and the early settlers. Most of the settlers were California Gold Rush miners. The miners operation had destroyed Modoc fishing. The Lower Soda Springs area had became filled with slit from mining. Squire Reuben Gibson and Mountain Joe Doblondy, were the leaders of the miners and settlers. They are to get Chief Weilputus, a leader of a local tribe who also were engaged in conflict with Modocs to join them. The group battled the Modocs in June 1855 and was able to kill Modoc Chief Dorcas Della. With the lost of the leader the Modocs departed the area. Some of the miners and settlers were wounded in the battle, including Poet Joaquin Miller. Miller wrote later that he was shot at and had an arrow go through his jaw and neck. Doc McClouds at Portuguese Flat inn worked on Miller's wounds and he rested there with the help of Mary Campbell McCloud. The battle was an early part of the later and larger Modoc War between the Modoc people and the United States Army.
