Promecognathus is a genus of ground beetles in the family Carabidae. There are at least two described species in Promecognathus. [1] [2] [3] [4] Both species of Promecognathus are known to predate upon Xystocheir dissecta, which is a species of flat-backed millipede that produces hydrogen cyanide as a chemical defense. The beetles do not avoid exposure to the defense, meaning they are likely physically resistant to hydrogen cyanide. [5]
These two species belong to the genus Promecognathus:
Hyphydrini is a tribe of predaceous diving beetles in the family Dytiscidae. There are about 16 genera and more than 390 described species in Hyphydrini.
Promecognathus laevissimus, also known as the smooth millipede hunter, is a species of ground beetle in the family Carabidae. It is found in western North America, including Oregon, California, and Nevada.
Agabinus is a genus of predaceous diving beetles in the family Dytiscidae. There are at least two described species in Agabinus. They are found in North America.
Acilius fraternus is a species of predaceous diving beetle in the family Dytiscidae. It is found in North America.
Cicindela nebraskana, known generally as the prairie long-lipped tiger beetle or black-bellied tiger beetle, is a species of flashy tiger beetle in the family Cicindelidae. It is found in North America. It grows between 12 and 13 mm in length, and is black in colour.
Cybistrini is a tribe of predaceous diving beetles in the family Dytiscidae. There are 7 genera and 128 described extant species in Cybistrini. The same set is also called Cybistrinae by authors viewing it as a subfamily of Dytiscidae.
Calathus opaculus is a species of ground beetle in the family Carabidae. It is found in North America.
Acilius semisulcatus is a species of predaceous diving beetle in the family Dytiscidae. It is found in North America.
Omophron gilae, the Gila River round sand beetle, is a species of ground beetle in the family Carabidae. It is found in Central America and North America.
Omophron obliteratum, the effaced round sand beetle, is a species of ground beetle in the family Carabidae. It is found in Central America and North America.
Omophron americanum, the American round sand beetle, is a species of ground beetle in the family Carabidae. It is found in, as well as native to, North America, ranging across most of the United States and Canada, except British Columbia.
Omophron robustum, the robust round sand beetle, is a species of ground beetle in the family Carabidae. It is found in North America.
Acilius sylvanus is a species of predaceous diving beetle in the family Dytiscidae. It is found in North America.
Acilius abbreviatus is a species of predaceous diving beetle in the family Dytiscidae. It is found in North America.
Xystocheir dissecta is a species of flat-backed millipede in the family Xystodesmidae. It is found in North America. If threatened, X. dissecta can release a hydrogen cyanide gas, which has benzaldehyde as a byproduct. This defense works against most beetle predators, except Promecognathus.
Omophron dentatum, the toothed round sand beetle, is a species of ground beetle in the family Carabidae. It is found in Central America and North America.
Omophron grossum, the large round sand beetle, is a species of ground beetle in the family Carabidae. It is found in North America.
Acilius confusus is a species of predaceous diving beetle in the family Dytiscidae. It is found in North America.
Promecognathus crassus is a species of ground beetle in the family Carabidae. It is found along the Pacific coast of North America, from British Columbia to California.
Omophron labiatum, the large-lipped round sand beetle, is a species of ground beetle in the family Carabidae. It is found in North America.
