Pyrochroa serraticornis (Scopoli, 1763) | |
Pyrochroa serraticornis, the cardinal beetle, is a species of fire-colored beetle in the family Pyrochroidae. It is found in Europe. [1]
Fire-coloured beetles or otherwise known as eyelash bugs are the beetles of the Pyrochroidae family, which includes the red cardinal beetles. Adults measure 4-20 mm; larvae reach 25 mm. Larvae of Pyrochroinae are found under moist bark of dead trees:they are probably mostly fungivorous, although they may become cannibalistic if too crowded.
The scarlet lily beetle, red lily beetle, or lily leaf beetle, is a leaf beetle that eats the leaves, stem, buds, and flowers, of lilies, fritillaries and other members of the family Liliaceae. It lays its eggs most often on Lilium and Fritillaria species. In the absence of Lilium and Fritillaria species, there are fewer eggs laid and the survival rate of eggs and larvae is reduced. It is now a pest in most temperate climates where lilies are cultivated.
The name cardinal beetle typically refers to three different species of beetles. The red-headed or 'common' cardinal beetle is a red to orange beetle with, as the name suggests, a red head. It is about 20 millimetres (0.79 in) long, and is found throughout Britain. The rarer black-headed cardinal beetle, similarly found at sites across Britain, is larger and a deeper blood red. The scarce cardinal beetle also has a black head, but is smaller at around 9 millimetres (0.35 in) long. The scarce cardinal is only found at a few sites in Scotland and Wales.
Dermestes is a genus of beetles in the family Dermestidae, the skin beetles. The genus is distributed worldwide.
Calonectria pyrochroa is a fungal plant pathogen infecting tea.
Semiotus ligneus is a species of click beetle from Central and South America.
Bostra pyrochroa is a species of snout moth in the genus Bostra. It was described by George Hampson in 1916, and is known from New Guinea.
Pediasia serraticornis is a species of moth in the family Crambidae described by George Hampson in 1900. It is found in Spain, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Jordan, Syria and Israel.
Typocerus is a genus of beetles in the family Cerambycidae, containing the following species:
Mordellistena serraticornis is a species of beetle in the genus Mordellistena of the family Mordellidae. It was described by Jan Horák in 1991.
Asthenotricha serraticornis is a moth in the family Geometridae first described by William Warren in 1902. It is found in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda.
Pterolophia serraticornis is a species of beetle in the family Cerambycidae. It was described by Stephan von Breuning and de Jong in 1941.
Cucullia serraticornis is a species of moth in the family Noctuidae. It is found in North America.
Micropsephodes is a genus of beetles in the family Anamorphidae. There are at least two described species in Micropsephodes.
The Cydistinae are a subfamily of phengodid beetles (Phengodidae). It contains the genera Cydistus and Microcydistus. The Cydistinae were until recently, incertae sedis due to their strange morphological characteristics, however molecular phylogenetics have shown them to be members of the Phengodidae. Unlike other Phengogidae, which are found exclusively in the Americas, Cydistinae are found in western Asia, including Southern and eastern Turkey, Jordan, Israel, Iraq, Iran, and possibly Syria.
Pyrochroa is a genus of cardinal beetle in the family Pyrochroidae. There are at least two described species in Pyrochroa.
Acanthophorus serraticornis is a species of prionine longhorn beetles from the Indian Subcontinent and is the sole species in the genus Acanthophorus. Some species that were formerly included in the genus are now placed in other genera. Growing to nearly 10 cm long they are among the largest beetles of India. These beetles are reddish to brownish. The mandibles vary in size with some males having much larger mandibles than the females. These bear two to three strong teeth from midway to the tip. The antennae are twelve segmented with the fifth to the eleventh having a spiny outgrowth at the tip.
Drapetes is a genus of beetles belonging to the family Elateridae.
Orithales is a genus of beetles belonging to the family Elateridae.
