The 2022 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to be the 22nd edition of the FIFA World Cup, the quadrennial international men's association football championship contested by the national teams of the member associations of FIFA. It is scheduled to take place in Qatar in 2022. This will be the first World Cup ever to be held in the Arab world and the first in a Muslim-majority country. This will be the second World Cup held entirely in Asia after the 2002 tournament in South Korea and Japan. In addition, the tournament will be the last to involve 32 teams, with an increase to 48 teams scheduled for the 2026 tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada. The reigning World Cup champions are France.

Sport in Qatar is primarily centered on football in terms in participation and spectators. Additionally, athletics, basketball, handball, volleyball, camel racing, horse racing, cricket and swimming are also widely practiced. There are currently 11 multi-sports clubs in the country, and 7 single-sports clubs.

At the 2017 World Table Tennis Championships in Düsseldorf Ding Ning defeated Zhu Yuling 4–2 in the final, becoming World Champion for the third time. She previously won the silver medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the women's singles event. 2015 World Mens Handball Championship 2015 edition of the World Mens Handball Championship

The 2015 World Men's Handball Championship was the 24th staging of the World Men's Handball Championship, organised by the International Handball Federation (IHF). The final tournament was held for the first time in Qatar, from 15 January to 1 February 2015. The Qatari bid was selected over those of Norway, Poland and France after a vote by the IHF Council on 27 January 2011, in Malmö, Sweden. This is the third time that the World Championship was hosted in the Middle East And North Africa, after Egypt in 1999 and Tunisia in 2005.

2016 UCI Road World Championships

The 2016 UCI Road World Championships took place in Doha, Qatar, in October 2016. The championships was moved from the traditional September to October to avoid extreme hot and blustery weather. The event consisted of a road race, a team time trial and a time trial for elite men and women and a road race and a time trial for men under-23, junior men and junior women. It was the 89th Road World Championships and the first time that Qatar and the Middle East hosted the championships.

2022 World Aquatics Championships 2021 edition of the World Aquatics Championships

The 2022 World Aquatics Championships — 19th FINA World Aquatics Championships will be held in Fukuoka, Japan in 2022. It will be the second time Fukuoka hosts this meet, 21 years after the 2001 World Aquatics Championships. The Championships were originally scheduled to be held in 2021, but when the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic the dates clashed, so the Championships dates were changed. The new dates are May 13-29, 2022.

Aspire Academy is a sports academy based in the Aspire Zone in Qatar, founded in 2004 with the goal to scout and help develop Qatari athletes, whilst also providing them with secondary school education.
