Malta, officially the Republic of Malta, is an island country in Southern Europe, located in the Mediterranean Sea. It consists of an archipelago, between Italy and Libya. It lies 80 km (50 mi) south of Sicily (Italy), 284 km (176 mi) east of Tunisia, and 333 km (207 mi) north of Libya. The Malta national under-17 football team represents Malta in international football competitions such as the FIFA U-17 World Cup, the UEFA European Under-17 Championship, as well as any other under-17 international football tournaments. It is governed by the Malta Football Association. In October 2009, Malta qualified from its group to the Elite Round that was played in March 2010. This success came around following a victory over the Netherlands 2-1 and an 0-0 draw with group host nation Andorra, after having lost the first match against Northern Ireland 2-0. Malta qualified as the best third-placed team.

The EBSA European Under-21 Snooker Championships is the premier amateur junior snooker tournament in Europe. The event series is sanctioned by the European Billiards & Snooker Association. It took place first in 1997 and is held annually since then. The event was known as the EBSA European Under-19 Snooker Championships until 2010. In most years the winner of the tournament qualifies for the next two seasons of the World Snooker Tour as well as being awarded the Ebdon Trophy which is named in honour of former World Champion Peter Ebdon.

Joe Grech was a Maltese snooker and billiards player. A professional snooker player for various years from 1988 to 2000, he won the IBSF World Billiards Championship in 1997. First competing as an amateur in the 1979s, he competed in amateur and professional snooker and billiards championships in a career spanning nearly 40 years. He won the Maltese English Billiards Championship on 21 occasions including 13 successive titles from 2003 to 2015.
