Queerythm is a registered community-based organization for queer people based in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India. [1] The organisation hosts the pride events in the capital city of Kerala. [2] [3]

Contents

History

The organisation started as a support group with regular monthly meetings for queer people. It was registered as a community-based organization on 18 May 2017 under the Travancore-Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Registration Act of 1955.

Purpose

The organisation aims for a society free of discrimination against gender and sexual minorities. [1]

Cultural Activities

Library

Queerythm launched a campaign to collect books for a library. The organisation plans to collect at least 2000 books, which will allow them to register at district library council. [4] [5]

Theatre

Queerythm launched a queer theatre group called Q-Rang during the 2019 pride events for two reasons. [2] [6] Firstly, the theatre offers a therapeutic experience for queer people who have experienced severe stigma and help them in accepting themselves. Secondly, such platforms give them a certain degree of visibility, which can aid ensuring social acceptance. [7]

Pride Events

2020

Queerythm organised the third pride event in the capital city of Kerala with the motto of growing beyond the individual and to the heart of the family, drawing family members of queer people. The 2020 events included a pride march, a gender awareness programme and cultural shows. [3] [8]

2019

Queerythm organised the 2019 pride events in the capital city of Kerala. The events included a pride march led by Kunnukuzhy Councillor Binu I.P, a cultural festival at Manaveeyam Veedhi inaugurated by cinema and theatre actor Archana Padmini and the launching of the queer theatre group Q-Rang. It was the first Indian pride event to observe the green protocol by avoiding plastic and other non-biodegradables. The organisation relied on handmade cloth banners, paper flags and paper posters. [2] [6]

Queerythm vs National Medical Commission

On 25 August 2021, Queerythm, along with the Malappuram-based queer organisation Dhisha filed a petition against National Medical Commission and Undergraduate Medical Education Board for unscientific, discriminatory, and derogatory content in the textbook prescribed for MBBS in Kerala High Court. [9] The petitioners pointed out that they had already given representations to the commission and the board for removing the unscientific content from the medical textbooks, but the authorities took no action. [10]

On 7 September 2021, Kerala High Court directed Undergraduate Medical Education Board to consider the removal of unscientific, discriminatory, and derogatory content without delay. [9] [10] [11]

Campaign

Anti-cyber bullying campaign

Queerythm collaborated with Blued, a gay social networking app, to launch an anti-cyberbullying campaign for queer people. The campaign raised awareness about catfishing, harassment and necessary safety measures and founded helpline numbers to report such incidents. [12] [13]

Research

Conversion Therapy

Queerythm supported Dr Sreya Mariyam Salim in her postgraduate research for Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram. The study found that 45% of queer persons in Kerala have been subjected to conversion therapy. [14]

Delhi Queer Pride Parade is organised by members of the Delhi Queer Pride Committee every last Sunday of November since 2008. The queer pride parade is a yearly festival to honour and celebrate lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, and their supporters. The parade usually runs from Barakhamba Road to Tolstoy Marg to Jantar Mantar.

Orinam is a non-funded, social, and activist collective that works to enhance understanding of alternate sexualities and gender identities among families, communities and society. It was founded in 2003 in Chennai under the name MovenPick and is one of the oldest collective of its kind in India. People affiliated with Orinam are from or trace their ancestry to the following geo-cultural: People of Tamil Origin from Tamil Nadu, India. Orinam provides a platform for creative expression, personal and social commentary by Queer people of Tamil Origin and of Indian Origin primarily. Orinam also acts as a local support group in Chennai for the queer community. Orinam also partners with the city-, state- and national initiatives around decriminalisation of homosexuality by amending Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code and LGBTQ rights.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Chennai Rainbow Pride</span> LGBTIQA+ Pride March

The Chennai Rainbow Pride March has been held by members of Tamil Nadu LGBTIQA+ communities every June since 2009. The pride march is organised under the banner Tamil Nadu Rainbow Coalition, which is a collective of LGBT individuals, supporters, and organizations working on human rights and healthcare for the LGBTQIA community. The Pride March occurs on the final Sunday of June every year. The Pride March is usually preceded by a month-long series of events organized by NGOs and organizations to inculcate awareness and support for the LGBTQ community, such as panel discussions, film screenings, and cultural performances. The Chennai Vaanavil Suyamariyadhai Perani a.k.a. Chennai Rainbow Self-Respect March is known for being inter-sectional in nature as it addresses issues with multiple axes such as caste, class, religion coupled with gender discrimination.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">LGBT rights in Kerala</span>

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in Kerala face legal and social difficulties not experienced by non-LGBT persons. However, Kerala has been at the forefront of LGBT issues in India after Tamil Nadu. It became one of the first states in India to establish a welfare policy for the transgender community and in 2016, proposed implementing free gender affirmation surgery through government hospitals. Same-sex sexual activity has been legal since 2018, following the Supreme Court ruling in Navtej Singh Johar v. Union of India. In addition, numerous LGBT-related events have been held across Kerala, including in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram. However, there is also increasing opposition to LGBT rights recently as evidenced by the anti-LGBT campaigns spearheaded by meninist groups and Muslim organisations like Indian Union Muslim League, Samastha and Jamaat-e-Islami.

Alencier Ley Lopez is an Indian film and theatre actor, who appears in Malayalam films. Lopez made his debut in the 1998 film Daya; and he worked in films like Annayum Rasoolum (2013), Njan Steve Lopez (2013), and Maheshinte Prathikaaram (2016).
