RT India is an Indian news platform associated with the Russian-owned RT network. RT India was announced during a media expansion initiative led by Russian president Vladimir Putin in India during a state visit to the country in December 2025. The channel broadcasts from a state-of-the-art studio in New Delhi and employs a staff of 100 people. [1] [2] [3]

History

The parent network lost a substantial amount of viewers in Europe and North America, but compensated by winning audiences in other markets, such as Latin America, Africa and parts of Asia. In late 2023, to anticipate the creation of a new channel specifically catering India, RT began a campaign in India, which criticized the western world's viewpoint of India as a third-world country. This was followed by a launch campaign in the weeks leading up to launch, featuring the slogan "a new voice from an old friend", referring to India's long-standing relations with Russia dating back to Soviet times. [4]

Broadcasts started on 5 December 2025, coinciding with Vladimir Putin's visit to India. The launch video featured quotes from Indian and Soviet leaders regarding bilateral relations. RT's editor-in-chief believes that India is "friendly and hospitable", in contrast with western countries where the channel was banned in 2022. [5] Ashok Bagriya, formerly of Hindustan Times and CNN-News18, was appointed CEO on the same day, and had a private interview with German Gref, CEO of the Russian state-funded bank Sberbank. The channel launched with four daily news bulletins, adapted for the local market. [6]
